The tragedy of the Fort Hayes game seemed to reverberate all over the area as Maysville's insane 3-point shooting sunk Northeast Nodaway in the fourth quarter of a 56-55 loss in the title game of the King City Tournament. The Wolverines had two main 3-pointer shooters and then had two players come off the bench to sink 3-pointers for the win in the fourth quarter.
Both teams sought to push the tempo in the first quarter and the result was the same sort of frantic fast-paced game that last year's meeting between the teams showcased. Neither team was able to take control of the game in the first quarter and neither team led by more than two. Taylor Zimmerman hit two 3-pointers for Maysville in the opening period and added two more buckets when she beat the press on one play and banked home a runner on another to score 10 points in the period for her team. Northeast countered with some balanced scoring as all five of their starters got in the scoring column. Rachel Runde scored from the left side; Michelle Schulte caught a tipped ball and ran over a defender for one score and added a putback; Kristin Sherry got behind the defense twice for layups; Blair Schmitz scored off two drives and Emily Bryant one as Northeast took an 18-16 lead after one quarter of play.
With both teams trying to press the other team out of the gym, it led to a lot of action that continued right up until the end. Northeast struck first as Michelle Schulte went to the line four times and went 4 for 4 from the line off drives while Kristin Sherry added a putback to put Northeast up 24-16. Maysville fought back to make it 24-19, but Rachel Runde found Michelle Schulte on a fast break and Emily Bryant got a steal in the post, threw it to Blair, who threw it to Michelle, whose pass to Kristin Sherry resulted in a layup to make it 28-19 with 2:28 left. Northeast had a chance to make it double digits but Zimmerman got a steal and three point play for Maysville as Northeast went cold in the final two minutes. Taylor Hale added a putback and Torri Blythe got a fast break against the press to cut Northeast's lead to 28-26 at the half.
Maysville's run continued into the second half as Hale got an inside shot and a 3-point play, Ashley Cole got another inside shot, and then Blythe added a steal and drive to make it 35-30. but Northeast responded as Michelle Schulte went to the line four more times off a steal and drive as well as a pass from Blair Schmitz off a cut. Rachel Runde found Kristin Sherry to put Northeast back up 36-36. Emily Bryant's 3-pointer put Northeast up 42-39 with 1:47 left in the third, but a late scoring burst by Hale brought Maysville back to within one at 44-43 after three quarters.
After offenses had dominated the first three quarters, both defenses took over for a while as neither team could get anything going to start the fourth until Alex Rhoad came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer for Maysville to put them up 46-44. Maysville had a chance to make it a two-possession game following a Northeast turnover, but could not capitalize and then overextended themselves on their trap as Northeast reversed it prefectly from Bryant to Blair inside to tie it up again at 46. Maysville had consecutive turnovers and Michelle Schulte went to the line and hit them both to put Northeast up 48-46 with 3:31 left. Rachel Runde then got a tieup for Northeast and Emily Bryant found Blair Schmitz on the left wing to make it 50-46 with 2:50 left. Taylor Hale slipped inside for a layup, but then Blair Schmitz on the break found Rachel Runde on the right side to put Northeast back up 52-48.
Brittany Helfrey came off the bench to hit a 3-pointer to make it 52-51 and Northeast threw it away, giving Maysville a chance to take the lead with a little over a minute left. But they threw up a quick shot that was no good and Runde atoned for her turnover by hustling after a defensive board and then Blair Schmitz found Emily Bryant open on the left wing for a 3-pointer to seemingly put Northeast in control at 55-51 with one minute left.
But then the 3-point insanity of the Hayes game seemingly reverberated all over the midwest; following a drive by Helfrey to cut it to two at 55-53 with 43 seconds left, Northeast ran it down to 27 seconds before Blair Schmitz missed a one and one, giving Maysville a chance to tie or take the lead in the closing seconds. It was Helfrey again who was open from the top of the key and her 3-pointer with 10 seconds left put Maysville up 56-55. Northeast pushed the ball up the court against Maysville's press and Emily Bryant missed a good look. Michelle Schulte grabbed the offensive board for what should have been the game winning layup but Coach Eric Fairchild called timeout before she could get her shot off and the referee ruled he had called it before Schulte shot it and Northeast had the ball underneath their basket with 1.3 seconds. Michelle Schulte was fouled at the buzzer but missed both her free throws as Maysville got the win.
