Foul woes sink Bluejay boys against Stanberry

Foul woes sunk Northeast Nodaway's boys against Stanberry as they fell to the Bulldogs 56-47 in semifinal action of the King City Tournament Thursday. "We played bad basketball and that's all I'm going to say about it," said Coach Ryan Madden after the game.

It looked like Bryce Farnan was going to have a big night against Stanberry as he dropped 10 points in the first quarter. He began scoring off an inside move with 7:30 left and then converted a putback into free throws at the five minute mark to give Northeast its first lead at 7-6. Stanberry went back up 16-13 off a Nathan Luke steal with 1:42 left but Northeast scored the next nine points to go up seven. Kevin Stoll pushed it up the floor and found Dalton Welch on the right side; Farnan went in against two defenders and drew a foul and hit two free throws and then Northeast got the ball to him again and he made two more to make it 19-16 after one quarter.

Aaron Patton scored off a drive when he ran over a defender and then Farnan split two defenders and hit two more free throws to make it 23-16. But then Farnan picked up his second foul and Stanberry began to come back. Free throws from Reid Osborn and Kevin Luke prompted Coach Ryan Madden to put Farnan back in, but then Tyler McQuinn scored off a drive to cut Northeast's lead to two. Farnan and Kevin Stoll then picked up their third fouls and Stanberry scored at will in the last four minutes, getting free throws from Nathan Luke and Travor Johnson as well as a drive and pullup from Tyler McQuinn, a putback from Cole Bremer, and a steal and drive from McQuinn to go up 32-24 before Aaron Patton's putback with 46 seconds left made it 32-26 at the half.

With Farnan back in, Northeast's fortunes made a turn for the better as Colby Wiederholt converted a 3-point play off a drive and then found Bryce Farnan inside for another to tie it at 32. Farnan scored again off a Colby Wiederholt drive and kickout and then added an off-balance shot from inside, but then picked up his fourth foul and sat down with 3:11 left in the third as Stanberry began to pull away again. Four free throws from Kevin Luke, who was getting to the line at will, put Stanberry back up 43-38 after three quarters.

Tyler Schmitz, who was a bright spot against Stanberry, kept Northeast in the game with a couple of buckets but Luke continued to score for Stanberry, using a fast break to put his team up 49-40 before Farnan came back in. He split two defenders twice to bring his team to within five. Luke connected from the high post for Stanberry, but after Stanberry had blocked two Northeast layup attempts, Aaron Patton scored off a drive to make it 51-46. Northeast had a chance to cut it to three, but a phantom traveling call by an official who was nowhere near in position to make the call gave it right back to Stanberry and the Bulldogs used an offensive board to help create a long possession and run down the clock all the way down from 3 minutes to 1:59 before Luke's free throw made it 52-46. Northeast could not get any offense going in the last few minutes as Tyler McQuinn went four for four from the line in the last minute to seal the win.
