Levi Cassavaugh Breaks 200 Yard Barrier; Worth County Stops Sixth Ranked LeBlond 64-12

Worth County's football team stopped sixth-ranked LeBlond and its high powered offense Friday 64-12 to get its third win of the season. A showdown with Albany will be next Friday at their place. Albany won a tough game against Stanberry, but has otherwise had just as little trouble against their opposition, including an impressive 60-0 win over Mound City.

The Tigers scored right off the bat when Levi Cassavaugh fought his way forward from the 15 to the 19. On the next play, Worth County tried the left side and Levi shot through the purple shirts like they weren't even there for Worth County's first score of the evening with 11:16 left in the first quarter.

But the question was whether the Tigers could stop Landon Gardner and LeBlond's high powered offense. Landon Wilmes pinned LeBlond on its own 14; he made the majority of the special teams tackles all night. The Golden Eagles marched right back down the field as Gardner threw a strike to Jake Korrell for 24 yards and runningback Carson Staggs got loose after the tackling broke down to the Tiger 15. But then two false starts, a flat pass that was snuffed out, and Gardner tripping and falling set up third and 26 at the 31. Tyler New broke up the third down pass and LeBlond elected to punt it away to the Tigers at their own 15. Unlike Christian, which went for it most of the time even on fourth and long, LeBlond elected to punt it.

Levi Cassavaugh picked up a carry of nine and Tyler New three to the 27. Braxton Hightshoe got loose on the jet sweep for 21 yards to the LeBlond 32. On the next play, New threw a strike to Dylan McIntyre got another score, and Cassavaugh ran it in to make it 14-0 with 6:51 left.

On the Golden Eagles' next series, Gardner tried to air it out, but Grant McIntyre simply threw up his big paws and the much smaller LeBlond receiver had no chance to come up with it. Carson Staggs picked up four on a short pass, but then Tanner Ridge flushed Gardner out of the pocket and Levi Cassavaugh cleaned up. LeBlond pinned Worth County on its own 8, but the Tigers simply put together a good drive, A bad snap looked like a potential disaster, but Tyler New ran and weaved his way 9 yards to the 21 for a first down. Levi Cassavaugh ripped off 4 and 18 yards behind good blocking up front, and Tyler New took it 15 yards to the 22. A false start set Worth County back to the 27, but Levi Cassavaugh and Tyler New took turns carrying it until Tyler got in the end zone with 19 seconds left in the first quarter to make it 20-0.

The Golden Eagles found daylight on the ground and got third and one at their own 34, but then took too long to get the next play in, let the play clock run down to three seconds, and got a false start. They were forced to punt, and Braxton Hightshoe got a good runback to the 38. A block in the back put the Tigers back on the 29, but that only made things more interesting. On fourth and eight at the 40, Tyler New scrambled nine yards for a first down and took it 11 more to the 20. Then, Levi Cassavaugh got a block from Creed Wilcox and got down to the 1 before Tyler New got a sneak to make it 26-0 with 7:05 left in the half.

LeBlond completed a couple of short passes and got the ball into Tiger territory, but Grant McIntyre recovered a fumble at the LeBlond 35. Worth County picked up three straight penalties and was faced with third and 33 at its own 22. But once again, that made things more interesting. First, Grant McIntyre caught a pass and bulldozed his way 26 yards to the LeBlond 32 to set up a manageable fourth and seven. Then, Tyler New's next pass caromed off Braxton Hightshoe only to wind up in the hands of Dylan McIntyre, who took it to the house with 1:57 left to make it 32-0.

LeBlond finally got down the field as Gardner aired it out 42 yards for a score with 1:48 left. But Worth County answered right back as they converted a fourth and three from their own 36 as Levi Cassavaugh took a handoff, started left, and then cut back to the right side with 26 seconds to score and make it 38-6. On the last play of the half, Carson Staggs caught a long pass, but was tackled at the 30 by Braxton Hightshoe to end the half.

The Golden Eagles got the ball to start the second half, and Gardner scrambled for a first down to the 36. But a mixup on a handoff set them back, and a short pass from Gardner to Max Bachali set up fourth and two at the Tiger 36. But then Jace Latham stopped Gardner cold and the Tigers took over on downs. Despite two holding penalties, Worth County marched down the field, getting a first down run on third and eight from Levi Cassavaugh. Tyler New completed passes to Dylan McIntyre of 12 and 6 yards and to Grant McIntyre for 13 yards. But then Tyler New started cramping up and had to come out of the game. Braxton Hightshoe took over the reigns at quarterback and ran in the remaining 10 yards for a score with 3:21 left to make it 44-6.

Despite an offsides call and a delay of game, LeBlond marched right down the field, getting a pair of long passes to Korell and Bachali to cut it to 44-12. Things threatened to get interesting when the Golden Eagles pulled off a successful onsides kick; one of the LeBlond players touched it right at the 40, ten yards down the field, and the purple shirts recovered it at the 40. But the Tigers held on defense as Dylan McIntyre and Tanner Ridge had pass breakups and they took over on downs at the 35. Worth County was faced with third and five, but Braxton Hightshoe aired it out to Dylan McIntyre for a strike to make it 50-12 at the start of the fourth and restore the running clock. By rule, the running clock takes effect if a team is up by 35 or more points in the second half.

Levi Cassavaugh recovered a fumble at the Golden Eagle 23, Worth County's second fumble recovery of the night, and things snowballed from there as Levi got a block from Grant McIntyre and took it to the house with 9:24 left and ran in the extra points to make it 58-12. That carry put him over the 200 yard mark for the night.

Gardner completed a long pass to Korell for 37 yards to go over the 200 yard mark for the night to take it down to the Tiger 15, and Gardner took it 7 more yards to the 8. But then an incomplete pass, a botched reverse play, and another incomplete pass gave the ball back to the Tigers on downs at the 18. Levi Cassavaugh took it 3 yards to the 21, and then Braxton Hightshoe got a block from Creed Wilcox to the 38. A holding penalty set the Tigers back to their own 35, but then Levi Cassavaugh took a dive play, bounced it out to the left, and was off to the races with 2:06 left to make it 64-12.

Fueled by a late hit, LeBlond went through the air and took it all the way down to the 2 before time expired for the game. The Tigers had 10 penalties for 100 yards, something that will have to improve if they are to continue their success against a potent Albany team. LeBlond had 6 penalties for 30 yards.

Levi Cassavaugh had 20 carries for 258 yards. Tyler New had 14 carries for 96 yards, and Braxton Hightshoe 5 carries for 57 yards. Tyler New had 6 completions in 9 attempts for 121 yards. Braxton Hightshoe had 1 completion in one attempt for 45 yards. Dylan McIntyre had 5 catches for 127 yards, while Grant McIntyre had 2 catches for 39 yards. Worth County ran 49 plays that went for 577 yards.

For LeBlond, Carson Staggs had 5 carries for 34 yards. Landon Gardner had 8 carries for 25 yards, and Jake Korrell 4 carries for 2 yards. Gardner had 14 completions in 25 attempts. Jake Korrell had 6 carries for 140 yards, while Carson Staggs had 3 carries for 37 yards and Max Bachali had 4 catches for 49 yards. Jackson Sigrist had 1 catch for 31 yards. LeBlond ran 42 plays that went for 328 yards.
