Tiger Bench Helps Worth County Corral Mustangs

Worth County’s girls broke up a tight game in the second quarter with a late push that put them ahead 22-12 at the half. Then, in the third quarter, after it looked like North Nodaway might come back when Anna Gladstone picked up three quick fouls, the bench came through to pull away from North Nodaway as the Tigers came away with a 48-31 victory Tuesday. Worth County also won the GRC Showcase Game against Milan 61-52 Saturday.

It looked like North Nodaway would jump out and take control early as Ashley Thompson got isolated twice inside and scored four quick points and Kandace Damgar hit a 3-pointer to make it 7-2 with 5:25 left in the first quarter. But then Anna Gladstone started stealing the ball, getting two steals and layups to make it 8-6. Then, she blew past Kristin Herndon to tie it up at 8 before Jill Hardy’s drive set up Regan Allee to make it 10-8 after one.

The game continued to be tight for the first part of the second quarter. Keagan O’Riley’s three-pointer tied it at 12-12. But then Jessi Badell hit Kristin New for three, and Worth County forced some late turnovers to fuel their run to get up 22-12 at halftime. Kristin New aired one out to Anna Gladstone in transition, and she beat Kristin Herndon for a layup. Anna then blew by three blue shirts and got a 3-point play, and Regan Allee added two free throws to get Worth County into double digit territory at the half.

Worth County continued to pull away to start the second quarter as Regan Allee hit Anna Gladstone inside and Anna added a free throw after going coast to coast. Regan Allee blew past Ashley Thompson to make it 27-12 to make it 15 straight points for Worth County.

But then Anna Gladstone picked up three quick fouls and the tide threatened to turn; Saylor Brown’s free throws cut it to 27-14 with 3:04 left. But then the bench for Worth County played its best game of the year, as Coach Les New went with four bench players plus Kristin New.

First, Jenna Smith hit Jill Hardy for three on the left baseline. Then, Megan Cassavaugh got one to Kristin New in transition, and she ran over Jadon Dobbins, got on the line, and hit two free throws with 39 seconds. Then, Worth County got the ball back, but Dobbins got a steal. But in the frantic sequence that followed, North Nodaway missed a layup, Jill Hardy got the defensive board and got it to Megan Cassavaugh, who drove and got it to Kristin New for a three-point play with 1.5 seconds to spare in the third quarter. That put Worth County ahead 35-14 after three.

Audrey Trimble got a steal to start the fourth quarter and break a North Nodaway drought in which they only scored two points from the midpoint of the second to the start of the fourth. But then Megan Cassavaugh hit Haley Hunt on the right side and Jill Hardy on the left side to make it 39-16 before Kristin Herndon got untracked with a three to make it 39-19 and Worth County’s starters came back in. When Anna Gladstone left with foul trouble, Worth County was up 15; when she returned, they were up 20 points.

Anna Gladstone scored two free throws off a drive; Ashley Thompson countered inside, but Kaylee McElvain scored from three to make it 44-21 with 4:59 left.

North Nodaway had another run left in them as Keagan O’Riley hit a guarded three and Kristin Herndon hit two free throws off a steal to make it 44-26 with 4:21 left, but then Ashley Thompson hit her head hard on the floor going after a loose ball. Emma Hart got a putback for North Nodaway, but then putbacks from Kaylee McElvain and Anna Gladstone helped Worth County reestablish control at 48-28 before both teams cleared their benches.

Anna Gladstone had 18 to lead Worth County. Kaylee McElvain had 9, Kristin New 8, Regan Allee 6, Jill Hardy 5, and Haley Hunt 2.

For North Nodaway, Ashley Thompson had 7, Keagan O’Riley 6, and Kristin Herndon 5.
