Mustang Girls Avenge Nodaway-Holt Loss Despite Breanna Day’s 1000th Point

Nodaway-Holt’s Breanna Day scored her 1000th career point last Monday, but North Nodaway avenged an earlier loss to the Trojans and beat them 51-45 to spoil their Courtwarming.

The focus of the game was to keep Day and post player Shaina Culp from going off, keep the Trojans off the offensive glass, and move the ball better than they did in the first game. They succeeded in each goal and got the win, getting an early lead and then holding off several Trojan attempts to rally.
Day scored the first points of the game for Nodaway-Holt, but then Kristin Herndon scored from the right side, Kandace Damgar hit a 3-pointer from the right wing after a turnover, Keagan O’Riley hit Audrey Trimble on the baseline, and Kandace Damgar scored off a steal to make it 9-2 at the 4:48 mark.

A Trojan timeout did not stop the bleeding as Keagan O’Riley scored a three off an Audrey Trimble drive, Shaina Culp picked up her second foul, and Keagan O’Riley ran over Kloe Jenkins to make it 14-2 with 2:52 left. Day’s putback cut it to 14-4, but Kristin Herndon had a chasedown stuff of Day to keep it from getting any closer in the first.

North Nodaway started turning the ball over, Ashley Thompson picked up her second foul, and Nodaway-Holt started coming back in the second quarter. Keagan O’Riley hit a 3-pointer off a Saylor Brown steal to make it 17-7, but then Halle Clement countered with one of her own and Day started getting untracked, getting a steal to make it 17-12. Damgar’s putback made it 19-12, but Culp got loose down low and Day hit two triples to put Nodaway-Holt in the lead at 21-20 with 1:28 left.

But the best part about the game was that every time Nodaway-Holt would catch up, North Nodaway would wake up and pull away again. Kristin Herndon scored off a drive with 1:19 left and Keagan O’Riley hit a three set up by an Audrey Trimble drive. Kloe Jenkins scored off a steal, but Trimble scored off the high post and North Nodaway held on to a 26-22 lead at the half.

North Nodaway needed to take better care of the ball in the second half, as they had 12 turnovers in the first half. They settled down to start the second half as Keagan O’Riley scored after Kristin Herndon got a tip and Kandace Damgar got a steal. Nodaway-Holt had been burning North Nodaway’s trapping zone, with Amanda Bohannon penetrating and kicking out to set up a lot of Day’s points in the first half, so they switched to a straight 2-3 in the second half. Keagan O’Riley hit Audrey Trimble on the right side and then Ashley Thompson drew Culp’s third foul and converted a three-point play to make it 33-22 with 5:42 left in the third.

Culp stayed in and threatened to take over as Nodaway-Holt got back to within 33-28 as Culp scored four of her team’s six points during the run. Things threatened to go bad for North Nodaway as Thompson picked up her third foul, but Culp followed her to the bench with her fourth. The teams traded scores until the end of the third, when Saylor Brown hit Keagan O’Riley for a guarded three with 2.6 seconds left to make it 41-32.

But North Nodaway got away from what was working to start the fourth, forcing passes, throwing the ball away, and jacking up threes as Culp and the Trojans came back to tie it at 45 with 3:54 left, with Culp scoring six of Nodaway-Holt’s 13 points during the run. Once again, North Nodaway recovered their senses in time as Audrey Trimble drove right down the middle of the lane to put North Nodaway back in front 47-45.

Emma Hart got a steal on defense for the Mustangs, but the red shirts stole it right back, got a good possession, and got a good look from Halle Clement from three that would have put them in front. But the shot went astray, and North Nodaway got it back and got it into Ashley Thompson. She took it straight at Culp, drew her fifth foul despite the enraged Trojan fans vehemently protesting, and made one of two to make it 48-45 with 2:28 left.

Thompson missed her second, but Keagan O’Riley got an offensive board. North Nodaway turned it back over as Kristin Herndon was called for a charge as she ran over Kailey Miller, Nodaway-Holt’s best defensive post with Culp fouled out. But Miller was shaken up and had to come out for the rest of the game.

With the ball back, Nodaway-Holt had a chance to tie or come within one, but North Nodaway could focus on Day with Culp on the bench, and her shot with 1:42 left was heavily contested and off. With nobody that could guard Thompson, North Nodaway ran a perfect high-low play to her with 1:29 left as Audrey Trimble threw her a strike for a layup to make it 50-45, a two possession game.

Nodaway-Holt tried to set a ball screen to get Day open for three, but Kloe Jenkins was whistled for her fifth foul for a moving screen with 1:18 left. Nodaway-Holt put on a full court press to try to get the ball back and forced a double dribble, but Day missed again and North Nodaway ran it down to 35 seconds before Kandace Damgar hit one of two to make it 51-45. Kayelyn Edmondson missed a three on the other end, and North Nodaway was able to run out the clock.

For North Nodaway, Keagan O’Riley had 19. Kandace Damgar had 10, Ashley Thompson and Audrey Trimble 8 each, Kristin Herndon 4, and Emma Hart 2.

Ashley Thompson and Kristin Herndon had 1 block each.

Ashley Thompson had 11 boards for North Nodaway. Audrey Trimble had 8, Kandace Damgar 7, Kristin Herndon 5, Keagan O’Riley 2, and Emma Hart and Saylor Brown 1.

Keagan O’Riley and Audrey Trimble had 5 assists. Saylor Brown and Kandace Damgar had 2, while Ashley Thompson had 1.

Kristin Herndon had 10 tips. Kandace Damgar had 6, Audrey Trimble 5, Ashley Thompson 2, and Saylor Brown, Emma Hart, and Keagan O’Riley 1 each.

Kandace Damgar had 4 steals. Kristin Herndon had 3, Audrey Trimble and Emma Hart 2, and Keagan O’Riley 1.
