Worth County avenged an Albany Tournament loss to Princeton and beat the Blue Tigers 43-42 as Caleb Parman's free throws with 10 seconds left won it for Worth County. The Tigers had trailed all night long to Princeton, only to get some key tips and steals along with some key offensive boards to come back and get the win. The defensive play of Caleb Parman on Preston Thomas was key as well. In the first meeting between the two teams, a 65-56 Princeton win, Thomas hung 36 points on Worth County. But in Friday's matchup between Worth County and Princeton, Parman held Thomas to 14 points.
The Tigers fell behind 12-2 after one quarter. Jaxon Anderson got a putback to put them up 2-0, but they did not score again until the second quarter. Meanwhile, Colton Estes scored from inside, Cameron Jones (not to be confused with the Pattonsburg guard with the same name) hit a 3-pointer and had a drive, Logan Dunkin had a drive, and Thomas got loose in transition as Worth County was missing shots and Princeton was beating them up and down the floor. It was starting to shape up like the Pattonsburg loss the night before, a forgettable 70-37 drubbing in the dome.
But then Jackson Runde hit back to back jacks to make it 12-8 early in the second. Princeton built it back up to 26-12 as Logan Dunkin got the hot hand and scored seven quick points and Thomas added a guarded three. Aydan Gladstone countered for Worth County as he got back to back jacks and Caleb Parman added a free throw to make it 26-19 at the half as Worth County was somehow still breathing despite Princeton's onslaught.
Colton Estes hit from inside to start the scoring for Princeton and the Blue Tigers tried to put on a press to put Worth County away, but the Tigers kept chipping away as Jaxon Anderson got loose against the press and Jacob New got loose in transition and got the ball from Jackson Runde to make it 28-23. The two teams traded scores for the rest of the third until Jaxon Anderson's free throw and Alex Rinehart's tipin got Worth County's deficit down to four at 33-29. Zeb Schwartzkopf's putback at the buzzer temporarily restored order for Princeton as they went into the fourth up six at 35-29, but Aydan Gladstone's free throw and Jackson Runde's three from the corner got it down to two at 35-33 to start the fourth, and all of a sudden, it was a brand new ballgame.
Worth County had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Preston Thomas got a drive after a steal by the blue shirts to make it 37-33. Jaxon Anderson's putback with 4:52 left cut it to two at 37-35, but Logan Dunkin cut inside with 3:57 left to make it four again at 39-35. Princeton had a chance to extend it, but Jacob New's steal and free throw with 3:08 left kept Worth County's chances alive at 39-36.
Thomas tried to get to the rim for Princeton, but Jacob New took a charge on Thomas. Worth County threw it away against Princeton's press, but they got a stop and Aydan Gladstone got loose in transition and hit a free throw to make it 39-37. His second toss missed, but Jaxon Anderson was there for the putback to make it tied at 39.
Princeton regained the lead as Thomas drove down the right side of the lane and finished to make it 41-39, and Worth County butterfingered a ball out of bounds. But Thomas missed a shot, and Jacob New got on the line after an offensive board and made one out of two with 53 seconds to make it 41-40. Anderson missed two putback tries, but got fouled on his second try and made one of two with 49.4 seconds left to tie it at 41.
Preston Thomas made one of two on the other end with 35.2 seconds as he was fouled on a drive down the left side, and Jackson Runde was driving down the left sideline when the ball took a crazy bounce and he traveled with it with Worth County trailing 42-41.
Caleb Parman got a steal off the press with 20 seconds left and missed two contested looks, and Worth County had to foul. But Princeton missed a 1-1, Austin Kelly gambled on a steal attempt on a long pass to Caleb Parman down the court, and fouled him with 10.8 seconds left. Caleb Parman's first try hit the front and back of the rim before dropping in, and his second try was nothing but net to give Worth County its first lead of 43-42 since the first quarter.
Princeton got the ball into the frontcourt and called timeout with 7.8 seconds left to set up a play. But on the ensuing play, Aydan Gladstone got a tip and Jaxon Anderson got a steal as time expired for Worth County.
