Merlin lived most of his life in Northwest Missouri around Worth and Gentry Counties. He began farming at the age of 13 and continued farming until 1963, when he started working for MODOT in Worth County, retiring from there in 1988.
His family was the love of his life. Everything he did was for his family. After he retired, he picked up a hobby from the hubcaps that he found along the road when he worked for MODOT. The hubcaps turned into some of the most unusual, pretty clocks. Then, he started making some fabulous wooden toys and trinket boxes, doll beds, and quilt racks for the love of his life, Betty. He made a Grandmother’s clock that is as tall as a person, with shelves so she could put stuff on if she wanted to. She was proud of everything he created. He made 7 cuckoo clocks for his children.
He accepted Christ as his Savior as a small boy and was baptized into a United Brethren Church. He was raised in a Christian home, related Christ into our lives, telling some wonderful stories about his relationship with his Lord.
He lived a long and wonderful life, leaving each of us with qualities that are a part of who we are today.
He has told many stories of his boyhood, without the many comforts that we expect today. The memories that we have of him are wonderful, family-filled, and will remain with us for the rest of our lives. We thank the Lord every day that we had him. He is now with his heavenly father and has eternal peace.
Funeral services were 2:00 p.m. Wednesday April 9th at the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home. Rev. Patricia Longstroth officiated. Interment was in the Grant City Cemetery in Grant City.
