The increase in glyphosate resistant corn and the number of soybean acres using glyphosate technology has driven the market to use glyphosate products in a majority of crop acres in Northwest Missouri. Generic glyphosate products have been in the market place which provided an opportunity for lower costs. However, this season, this is not the case.
The Brand name glyphosates which may have cost around $40 per gallon have almost doubled. The generic glyphosates, which were priced less, have also doubled. This leads to many growers concerned about this price increase and how to best manage glyphosate products.
Research from the University of Missouri indicates that generic glyphosates will perform as well Brand name Roundup in weed control. This research matches that from other Land-Grant Universities and Extension Services.
With the increase in glyphosate resistant corn, it is easy to apply glyphosate without regard to weed resistance management. It is best to apply a pre-emergence/post-emergent glyphosate program designed to control potential herbicide resistant weeds rather than the typical two pass system of glyphosate.
