Book Talk 4-25-08
Several readers have enjoyed the novels about the Amish by Wanda E. Brunstetter. Her series, The Brides of Webster County, is set in Missouri. Going Home tells the story of a young woman who left ten years earlier to be an entertainer. Now she is widowed and comes back with her six-year-old daughter. A local bachelor becomes interested in her. She must decide which dream she will choose – a career she’s always wanted or the family she hasn’t had. On Her Own is the story of another young widow. She is trying to keep her husband’s harness shop going and raise their four young sons after her husband dies unexpectedly. Her husband’s brother comes for the funeral and stays to oversee the harness shop. At the same time a widower fifteen years older is looking for a mother for his four teenage daughters. Karen Kingsbury has been another popular author. Divine by Karen Kingsbury puts the Biblical account of Mary Magdalene into a modern day setting. Another book contains three novels by Karen Kingsbury. Where Yesterday Lives tells the story of a prize-winning journalist. After her father dies, she returns to her childhood home to make peace. When Joy Came to Stay is the story of a woman’s descent into depression, her husband’s search for understanding, and a child’s unwavering faith. On Every Side is the story of a woman newscaster forced to take a stand against the one man she didn’t imagine would be her enemy.
