New Soybean Pest in Missouri

The soybean tentiform leafminer (STL) moth is no bigger than George Washington’s nose on a quarter.

But don’t underestimate it, says Ivair Valmorbida, University of Missouri Extension state field crops and forage entomologist.

Valmorbida confirmed STL’s presence in 2025 in Cooper County in a field next to a wooded area, its preferred infestation area.

Macrosaccus morrisella feeds on two native plants in the soybean family, American hog peanut and slickseed fuzzybean. It now has adapted to feed on soybean, Missouri’s top agricultural crop. First detected feeding on soybeans in the United States in 2021, STL is most prevalent in Minnesota.

The small moth has wings with orange, white and gray-black marks. Females lay eggs on the underside of soybean leaves. Its larvae feed inside the leaves and form mines that do not cross the midribs or main lateral leaf veins. The mines start small but grow longer and cause small white blotches. Mined tissue dies, reducing leaf area.

Because this pest is so new, management options are still being developed, says Valmorbida. Initial research shows that insecticides with translaminar properties can reduce numbers and mined leaf area in field trials. Screening of soybean genotypes identified certain cultivars that were less susceptible to this recently recognized pest.

Valmorbida recommends these management strategies:

• Monitor field edges, especially those near wooded areas, for early signs of STL infestation.

• Alert your local MU Extension agronomist if you think your soybean may be infected with STL, or email Valmorbida at ivairvalmorbida@missouri.edu.

Gilman City Homecoming February 6th

Gilman City is going back to Y2K for its homecoming game Friday, February 6th at 6 pm against East Harrison. The 2000’s were the last time that Gilman City’s girls were on top of the basketball world before last year, winning 22 in 2006 and 24 in 2008 and winning a sectional game.

Monday will be Y2K goes wild; wear animal print. Tuesday will be Tacky Trends Tuesday; wear 2000’s outfits. Wednesday will be Class Color Day. Thursday will be Boyband vs. Pop Princess; dress as your favorite 2000 musician or celebrity. Friday will be Blue and White Day.

Mini Rocks, Little Rocks to Perform Feb. 19th

North Harrison’s Little Rocks (Grades 1-5) and Mini Rocks (PK, K) will perform Friday, February 19th during the intermissions of the games between North Harrison and East Harrison. The games will start at 6 pm. The theme will be “Wicked Good Time.”

Cost will be $20 and include a t-shirt. Deadline to sign up will be Friday, January 23rd.

Practice times will be February 11th, 12th, and 18th from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. Your child can be picked up at the Elementary doors at 5 pm. You need to send a note for your child to stay after school for practice.

The Mini Rocks will perform during the girls halftime. The Little Rocks will perform during the boys halftime.

North Nodaway Baseball Signups

A signup meeting for Hopkins baseball, softball, and t-ball will be held Monday, February 9th at 6 pm at the Hopkins Community Building. If you have a child interested in playing, please attend this meeting. Please bring your signup sheet with you. Provide a copy of your child’s birth certificate to have in their records.

The Hopkins Ball Association is seeking volunteers to prepare the field, coach, and umpire.

All parents must sign up to work the concession stand throughout the ball season. Each family is required to pay a $50 deposit by May 1st. Once you have worked for each kid playing, you will get your deposit back. If deposit is not paid, your child will not play. If you do not work, your deposit will not be returned. Please provide two separate checks if you are paying via check.

Signup deadline is February 15th; no late entries will be accepted. Cost is $25 per child, $15 for each additional child, and $15 for t-ball.

Each team will have the same t-shirts as last year. If your child is moving up in age to a new team or just starting, they will need a new shirt. Cost for shirts is $20. Cost for hats are $18; they are required for baseball, but not softball.
