Joe Hertl 1937-2026

     Joseph John Hertl, Jr. was born on May 12, 1937 in Glasgow, Montana the son of Joseph John, Sr. and Eva (Rittal) Hertl.  He passed away May 23, 2026 in Allendale, Missouri at the age of 89.

During the eighth grade his family moved to California.  He graduated from San Lorenzo High School.  He went to join the Naval Reserves in Alameda Naval Air Station.  Joe worked at Western Electric and Caterpillar.

He married Roberta Russo and they had two children, Sherri Lynn and Stacy Leigh.  The family moved to South Lake Tahoe, California and he worked for Pacific Bell and AT&T until he retired with thirty years of service.

On November 21, 1981 he married Michele Platt and they moved to Folsom, California.  In 1998 he and his wife moved to Allendale, Missouri where they bought the old RLDS Church.  He and his father-in-law Denzel Platt worked during the summers remodeling it into a home.

Joe enjoyed fishing, especially fly fishing.  He tied his own flies and made his own fishing rods. He taught his two girls, nieces, nephews and grandson how to fish and took them many times on fishing trips to fly fish on the Yellowstone.  He was a talented wood carver and produced many beautiful items with his wood lathe.  These became coveted Christmas and wedding gifts.  Joe was also a talented cook.  He would watch something being made on TV cooking channel and then make it for supper that night.

He was a member of the Middle Fork United Methodist Church for 25 years.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Eva (Rittal) Hertl; father and mother-in-law Denzel and Bernadene (Saville) Platt; sister-in-law Helen (Moore) Hertl.

Joe was survived by his wife of 45 years Michele Hertl; two daughters Sherri (Craig) Johnson and Stacy (Eddie) Kelsay; grandson Ryan (Chelsia) Gorman; two great grandchildren Renley and Cain Gorman; brother Jim Hertl; brother-in-law Martin (Katy) Platt; three nieces Julie (Matt) Ridgeway, Nikki (Tao) Sadler; Christy (Glenn) Soby; nephew Andrew (Vanessa) Platt.

Graveside service and inurnment will be 11:00 am, Monday, June 1, 2026 at the Redding Cemetery in Redding, Iowa.  Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home of Grant City, Missouri is handling arrangements.
