The 11 and under Tiger softball team preserved their undefeated mark Monday by coming back from a 5-0 deficit against Maryville to win 6-5.
They were completely outplayed in the first 2½ innings, but Hadley Downing beat out an infield single to third to drive in Worth County’s first run of the game and stole second and third. Tatum Allee walked and Dadan Findley singled home Downing to cut it to 5-2. Jane Hawk’s pop fly dropped in left for a single; the runners had to hold up to make sure the ball wasn’t caught, but Tatum Allee scrambled to third safely just ahead of the force play.
Kaitlyn Moyer’s shot on the ground was hit so hard, neither the third baseman nor the left fielder had time to reach down and pick it up, and she reached second as two runs scored to cut it to 5-4. Kaydence Downing’s slow roller caromed off the pitcher for a scratch hit to tie it at 5-5. At this level, each team plays until three outs or five runs.
Worth County had to hold in the fourth to get a chance to walk it off in the bottom of the inning. First, first baseman Teagan Saville fielded a grounder cleanly and stepped on the bag for an out. Then, Katelyn Moyer worked around a walk with two strikeouts and the Tigers had their chance.
With one out, Rivers Siegrist reached second on a throwing error and stole third, forcing Maryville to draw its infield in for the play at the plate. Gabbey Maudlin beat out a slow roller to short to bring in the run and get the win.
