Worth County’s boys went through a forgettable stretch which included two straight running clock losses to powerhouses Mount Ayr and Green City in December. But the Tigers righted the ship against Stanberry and then won a 46-34 win over North Harrison Friday. Tyler New had 28 points, 11 boards, and 10 steals as he made a key defensive play to quash a Shamrock rally in the third quarter as the Tigers preserved their lead.
The game featured two teams in desperation mode as both teams were finding wins hard to come by this year, with North Harrison yet to win after getting an opening night win over North Nodaway. Worth County forced more turnovers, as North Harrison surrendered the ball 21 times to 13 for the Tigers. But North Harrison used the boards to stay in the game as they outrebounded Worth County 37-28, with Keygun Johnson getting 14 for the night.
The score was tied at 2 and 4 before Levi Cassavaugh hit Tanner Ridge, who drove to the basket and Tyler New, who posted up and scored inside. It didn’t help North Harrison’s cause that Tyson Gibson picked up two quick fouls trying to guard New. Dustin Hamilton drove off a pass from Evan Schreiber to cut the Shamrock deficit to 8-6, but Tyler New drove and hit a pullup to make it 10-6 after one.
Tyler New took over the second quarter, stealing the ball at will, scoring four points off steals and adding a 3-pointer while Levi Cassavaugh added a 3-pointer. That made the score 20-8 at the 3:13 mark. But North Harrison started hanging around, getting a free throw and a coast to coast look from Tyson Gibson and a putback from Keygun Johnson. Tyler New’s drive with 1:12 left made it 24-13 but Kolton Graham hit Tyson Gibson inside and he hit two free throws. Keygun Johnson scored off an Ethan Henson steal to cut it to 24-17.
A totally unnecessary foul on Tyler New, when he was three quarters of the length of the floor away from the basket with three seconds left, led to two free throws and a 26-17 halftime lead for the Tigers. New added another free throw to start the third to make it 27-17, but then Keygun Johnson scored from inside off a pass from Ethan Henson and Jerry Gilpatrick added a 3-pointer to make it 27-22. Worth County looked to be in trouble as Tanner Ridge picked up his fourth foul and Karson Briner his third. Keygun Johnson scored from inside off a pass from Tyson Gibson and Jerry Gilpatrick hit Ethan Henson for three, and all of a sudden, the game was tied at 27.
North Harrison got the ball back and was running a fast break the other way, but all of a sudden, instead of the Shamrocks taking the lead, it was Tyler New stealing the ball and taking it the other way to put the Tigers in front 29-27 with 44 seconds left in the third, a four point turnaround. North Harrison could not answer as they missed the front end of a 1-1, and Tyler scored again to start the fourth to make it 31-27.
Evan Schreiber cut it to 31-29, but then the Tigers put together a good fourth quarter to pull away for the win, as five different players scored and not just Tyler New. Karson Briner scored from inside after Tyler New set him up with a drive and Levi Cassavaugh hit Tyler New, who drove and scored to make it 35-29 with 5:27 left.
Karson Briner, the best rebounder on the team for the Tigers, picked up his fourth and fifth fouls and sat out, but it didn’t help matters for the Shamrocks as they missed four free throws in a row and could not take advantage of the Tigers’ struggles during that stretch.
Then, Cannon Fletcher got loose in transition and nobody picked up Levi Cassavaugh, who drained a shot from just inside the arc at the top of the key to make it 39-29. Keygun Johnson scored from inside off a lob from Jerry Gilpatrick and then got a steal, drew a foul, and hit two free throws with 2:07 left to make it 39-33. Levi Cassavaugh hit Tanner Ridge for a drive, but Tyson Gibson made a superhuman effort, nearly leaping clear over Tyler New to grab a rebound and drawing a foul on him; he made one out of two make it 41-34.
But then Gibson fouled out and Worth County regained control at the line, making five out of six down the stretch to pull away and win by 12.
