Jill Boswell Boards 10 as Bluejays Beat Rock Port

Jill Boswell stepped up into a bigger role Friday, getting 10 boards as Northeast Nodaway’s girls bounced back and got a 44-32 win over Rock Port, a team vastly improved over last year.

Previously, the Bluejays saw Jaden Atkins (knee) and Skyler Florea (shoulder) go down with injuries in consecutive games. Going into the Nodaway Valley game, against a 275 contender, they were shorthanded against the Thunder and fell 47-31.

With another quality opponent coming up, Northeast had to have people step up in order to win. Baylie Busby stuffed the stat line as usual with 11 points, 7 boards, 9 assists, 7 tips, and 9 steals. Dalanie Auffert got her usual numbers with 9 points, 7 boards, and 5 blocks. It was Jill Boswell who stepped up the most, mixing it up and getting 10 boards for the Bluejays. Hadley DeFreece stepped up as well, getting 11 points on offense to share scoring honors with Busby and added 9 tips on defense. And Sasha Deardorff stepped up with a couple of clutch baskets after Rock Port made things interesting in the fourth quarter.

The game was tied in the first quarter at 3, 5, 7, and 10 as Northeast weathered an assault by the Meyerkorth girls with two 3-pointers from Hadley DeFreece. Finally, Dalanie Auffert hit two free throws after an entry pass from Mylee Wilmes and Jill Boswell hit a shot from the right side to make it 14-10 after one.

Boswell struck again to start the second and then Hadley DeFreece hit a 3-pointer after a pass from Boswell. Baylie Busby scored after Sasha Deardorff grabbed a third chance offensive board to make it 21-12.

Rock Port put on the press and made a run to cut it to 21-16, but Northeast weathered the storm as Dalanie Auffert scored to make it 23-16 at the half.

Dalanie Auffert scored from inside to start the third quarter, Busby and Auffert hit free throws, Sasha Deardorff got behind the Rock Port defense and scored, and Auffert scored from inside after a Busby lob to make it 31-18. Busby hit a 3-pointer and Makenzie Pride came off the bench to make it 36-20. Rock Port hit a 3-pointer, but Busby hit a free throw to make it 37-23 after three.

But then the Bluejays had a shaky fourth quarter; they put on a clinic through three, but then gave up too many offensive boards, did a lot of hacking and fouling, and turned it over against the Rock Port press. Dalanie Auffert picked up her fourth and fifth fouls, leaving Northeast without one of their best defenders and rebounders; without her, Rock Port was rebounding the ball at will.

The lead steadily shrunk despite a clutch basket from Sasha Deardorff, in which she got behind the Rock Port defense as they overextended themselves on the press. Rock Port came as close as 40-32, but then Sasha Deardorff got behind the Rock Port defense again and came up with another clutch basket to make it 42-32 with 18 seconds left. Baylie Busby fouled out, but Rock Port missed four straight free throws at the end that would have made it interesting. Finally, Jill Boswell aired one out to Hadley DeFreece, who got behind the Rock Port defense and scored for the dagger with 10 seconds left.

Hadley DeFreece and Baylie Busby had 11 points each. Dalanie Auffert had 9, Sasha Deardorff 6, Jill Boswell 5, and Makenzie Pride 2.

Dalanie Auffert had 5 blocks. Jill Boswell and Sasha Deardorff had 1 each.
