In 1961, Wrestling Came to Blockton

Blockton once had a wrestling match come to town in 1961. Buddy Austin wrestled Sonny Myers, Judy Glover wrestled Peggy King, and Happy Humphrey wrestled Tommy O’Toole. People were just as worked up about their wrestlers back then as they are now, with one lady in particular hitting one of the wrestlers with her purse. Happy Humphrey, billed at 750 pounds and the world’s largest wrestler, won his match as he simply smothered O’Toole with his weight. Admission was $1.25 for adults and 50 cents for children, and the event was held at the old community building across from Schoenmann’s Hardware Store.

This wasn’t the only match to come to Blockton; another time, Big 2 Wrestling came to Blockton with Danny Little Bear and others.

Sonny Myers was from St. Joseph and had many championships and accomplishments to his name. He was the Buchanan County Sheriff at one point and owned a carnival for 22 years. He came to the Grant City Golf Course 4th of July Golf Tournament for several years.

One of the biggest wrestling events to come to Grant City was during the 1980’s during the Worth County Fair, when Bulldog Bob Brown, Great Pogo, Super Destroyer, David Petersen, The Coyote, Liz Chase, Sandy Pearson, and others came to the Grant City Square. Boxing used to be a common sport as well; for instance, in 1946, right after beating King City for the GRC Football Title 27-20, Worth County beat King City in the boxing arena.
