Sights and Sounds of Redding in 1886

The July 8th, 1926 edition of the Redding Herald published the following excerpts from The Independent, published in Redding in 1886. From the June 10th, 1886 Independent, we learn the following:

The city officers were F.M. Wisdom (Mayor), J.M. Baird (Marshall), F. Rawson (Deputy Marshall), Dr. Lawhead, Joseph Allbee, Milt Sullivan, J.W. Beaman, L.P. Milburn, and J.H. Allyn (City Council), and M.A. Waugh (Recorder).

Rev. Aten was pastor of the Methodist Church. There were two doctors, A.E. King and T.H. Humphreys. J.F. Ransen was the barber. J.M. Baird was a contractor and builder. Ed. Boughner was the house and sign painter.

The big talk of town was the extension of the railroad from Redding to Grant City, which they were seeking to get. Citizens in Jefferson Township, Taylor County, were voting on a railroad tax in aid of another rail line. Jefferson Township consists of Blockton and Athelstan and the rail line in question was the one which ran through Sheridan, Parnell, and Ravenwood.

A big crowd of citizens met at Mayor Wisdom’s office for the purpose of organizing the upcoming 4th of July celebrations; officers were elected.
