Shamrocks Hold Off Hawks on Senior Night; Baily Briggs, Camden Castleberry Honored

North Harrison beat Gilman City 10-6 Monday and honored seniors Camden Castleberry and Baily Briggs along with golfer Karley Koch. The Shamrocks built up a big lead, prompting Gilman City to make some lineup changes, a luxury for them after fielding nine players the last few years. A totally different Hawks team took the field for the last few innings as they made things interesting before North Harrison held on for the win.

The Shamrocks were shorthanded, playing without pitcher Erica Gerken (rib); Camden Castleberry had to pitch for them. That changed the chemistry of the team, but Castleberry made enough good pitches to get out of the big inning and the hitting was good enough that they were able to build up a cushion.

Ruby Heintz reached on an error in the first to score Camden Castleberry from second to put the Shamrocks up 1-0, but Gilman City answered in the second on an error, a walk, a wild pitch, and two groundouts to go up 2-1.

The bottom of the order came through for North Harrison in their half of the second. With one out, Jaci Davis reached on a throwing error and Kayka Wilson, pressed into service at the plate with Gerken out, hit a single that got past the left fielder for an error to put runners on second and third. Davis scored on a wild pitch, putting Kayka on third. Amber Wilson got a slap hit as Kayka scored, and Camden Castleberry hit a shot off the bag at third that bounded down the left field line into the corner for a triple as Amber Wilson scored to make it 4-2.

Camden Castleberry only needed four pitches to get out of the third, and then Ruby Heintz reached on a dropped fly to start the Shamrock third. The next two batters popped out, but Jaci Davis hit a pop fly in front of home plate that dropped in for a scratch hit to keep the inning going. Kayka Wilson grounded into a fielder's choice, but Ruby was safe on the force play at third. Amber Wilson hit another tricky grounder; Gilman City tried to come home for the force, but Ruby Heintz came in with a hard slide that knocked the ball out of the catcher's hand and everybody was safe. Trendi Johnson then doubled to left center to score two and put Amber Wilson on third. Camden Castleberry then beat out an infield hit, Amber Wilson scored, Trendi Johnson came all the way around from second to score, and Camden took second on the throw home. Jayliegh Robins then beat out a grounder to second as Camden scored all the way from second.

Gilman City got a run back in the fourth when, with runners on first and third, catcher Jayliegh Robins gunned down Maddie Malone at second as Laina Ward scored on the play to make it 10-3.

From there, the Hawks made several lineup changes, and a totally different team took the field for the next few innings. North Harrison continued to put the ball in play, but hit it right at people. Meanwhile, Gilman City got two runs back in the sixth when Ericka Burke tripled to center to score two, and another when Jiana Stotts grounded out to score her to make it 10-6.

The last few outs are the hardest to get, and anything was possible once the speedy Ava Langfitt beat out an infield hit with one out. Finally, catcher Jayliegh Robins gunned her down at second for the second out. But the final out is usually the hardest to get, and the next two batters walked. Without the caught stealing, the tying run would have been coming to the plate. But Kelsey Sperry hit a hard shot that was snagged by Castleberry for the third out.

The Junior Varsity lost 5-3 in the nightcap. Kira Robertson had a double, Katelyn Briggs added a single, and Halle Morgan had a single and later scored on a wild pitch. She also had a catch in the outfield, after she had gotten plunked in the forehead trying to make one in the varsity game; she stayed in the game. Catcher Ruby Heintz threw a runner out stealing, and the Shamrocks turned a 1-3-2 double play when, with a runner on third, pitcher Trendi Johnson handled a hard shot, threw to Lily Shovick at first, who threw home to Heintz to nail the runner coming home.
