Ali Brown hit a monster triple and shut down an increasingly dangerous Albany lineup, and Worth County had 16 hits Tuesday as they put away Albany 8-3 after holding off a Warrior rally in the seventh.
The game started off as a pitching duel between Brown and Montana Moffat. Worth County ran themselves out of a good inning as pinch runner Brooklyn Richardson (running for Brown) was cut down at the plate trying to score from second on a scratch hit from Autumn Cousatte in the first, but right fielder Abbi Brown made back to back catches after Albany got runners on first and third to keep the Warriors off the board.
Worth County continued to put it in play, but was hitting it right at people in the second as they stranded two runners in that inning. But first baseman Kara Staton robbed Ashley Sterkis of extra bases to keep the Warriors off in the second.
Ali Brown finally got the Tigers on the board in the third. She hit a monster shot down the left field line towards the corner; it looked like it would hook foul at the last minute, but it dropped in fair as she reached third base. Kynah Steele flied out to bring her home and make it 1-0. Albany got the run back as Delaney Shields singled and Moffat doubled her home to tie it at 1-1. But a leadoff walk in the fourth proved costly for Albany as Brylee Rush walked and Taylor Sanders doubled to the wall in left center to score her. Lanie Cousatte, who had one of her best days with her bat as a Tiger, singled her home to make it 3-1.
Albany threatened in their half of the fourth as Addisyn Crawford doubled with one out, and Ashley Sterkis hit a shot off Ali Brown's glove that looked headed for trouble. But shortstop Kynah Steele alertly grabbed it and threw to first for the second out as Crawford took third. Brown struck out Aryssa Martin to get out of the inning.
The Tigers escaped another jam in the fifth as Hailey Sterkis reached on an error and Albany's best bunter, Delaney Shields, came to bat. Third baseman Taylor Sanders airmailed the bunt attempt, and Sterkis tried to come all the way home from first, but right fielder Abbi Brown threw a strike to Autumn Cousatte at the plate to get the out. Montana Moffat reached on a scratch hit, but Abigail Troncin popped out to Steele at short to end the threat.
Worth County finally broke the game open in the sixth as the first five batters all got hits. Kara Staton singled down the right field line, Lanie Cousatte singled to right center, and Aivry Griffin laid down a perfect bunt that rolled past the pitcher and into no-man's land. The second baseman had gone over to cover first, and there was nobody there to field it as the bases were loaded. Hailey Adwell singled to center to score Staton and Ali Brown got her third hit with a single to left that brought in two. Kynah Steele forced Richardson (running for Brown) at second, but Autumn Cousatte singled in Adwell. Taylor Sanders singled in the last run, and when the dust had settled, Worth County was up 8-1.
But the heart of the Albany order came up to start the seventh, and Shields was plunked by Brown with one out in the seventh. Montana Moffat reached on a botched force attempt at second, Troncin hit a shot off Brown's glove that nobody had a play on, and Cory Worrell singled home two runs. Finally, Crawford popped out to Taylor Sanders at third, and she stepped on the bag to double off Troncin to end the game.
The Junior High had a bad second inning and lost to Albany 6-3. Kristen Tracy and Rylee Ruckman got hits for the Tigers. Ruckman had two steals for the Tigers, while Tracy, Addison Gray, and Alivia Moyer had stolen bases. Summer Riley, Riley Ridge, Keira Hardy, Arianna Galanakis, and Kristen Tracy had catches in the field.
The JV won 8-4. Brooklyn Richardson had a triple. Aivry Griffin, Liz Brown, and Kara Staton had singles. ZeeAnna Gladstone stole two bases. Pitcher Brooklyn Richardson struck out seven.
