Asian Longhorned Tick Confirmed in Missouri

The Missouri Department of Agriculture, working in conjunction with the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services and Missouri State University, has confirmed the first finding of an Asian longhorned tick (Haemaphysalis longicornis) in Missouri. Missouri becomes the 16th state with a presence of the tick species, following the first confirmed report of the Asian longhorned tick in the United States in 2017.

Asian longhorned ticks are light brown in color and are very small, often smaller than a sesame seed. Unlike other ticks, a single female Asian longhorned tick can produce offspring (as many as 1,000 at a time) without mating. That means individual animals could host thousands of ticks, which can cause great stress on a heavily infested animal.

The Department encourages producers to continue protective measures and to check their livestock regularly for ticks. Keeping grass and weeds trimmed and clearing away brush are important tick prevention practices. If you spot any unusual looking ticks or large infestations on your animals, contact your local veterinarian.

According to the Center for Disease Control, the Asian longhorned tick appears to be less attracted to human skin. However, ticks of any kind should be removed immediately, as they can carry diseases that affect human health. Use EPA-approved insect repellent when you will be in or near tall grasses or wooded areas.

Research on the presence of tick species in Missouri continues through a partnership between the Missouri Department of Conservation and A.T. Still University. Residents are asked to send ticks to the University through September 2022 so that University researchers can study the distribution of ticks in Missouri and any human pathogens transmitted by those ticks. For more information, or to find out how to submit a sample, visit Missouri ticks and tick-borne pathogen surveillance (atsu.edu).

Some of the Best Eight Man Games of All Time

This week, the Missouri Eight Man Coaches Association asked which Missouri eight man game was the best anybody had ever seen. Here are some of the posts from readers, along with some of our picks, in no particular order:

2020 North Shelby 94, Pattonsburg 88 – Pattonsburg put together a frantic rally in the fourth quarter to make this one close. This game showed that the teams outside the Highway 275 and the Grand River Conference had arrived.

2015 Stanberry 46, North Andrew 42 – Stanberry made a goal line stand with seven seconds left to clinch the state title. They played many good games against each other during that stretch.

2011 Mound City 50, St. Joseph Christian 48 – The Panthers had the Lions’ number in previous years, but Christian almost pulled off this state semifinal game. Down six with less than a minute left, Mound City ran back a kick to tie and converted the extra points to win it and go back to state.

1988 Miami 22, North Andrew 14 – The Eagles were the Cinderella team that year, on a roll after dropping their first seven games. They invaded North Andrew for the right to go to state and the Cardinals were threatening to tie, aided by three offsides penalties. But the Eagles held and went on to go to the first ever Eight Man State Title Game.

2003 Mound City 20, West Nodaway 18 – Mound City marched down the field by completing several passes in a row from Zach Scarbrough to Zach Sharp and scored on a quarterback sweep by Scarbrough as time expired to get the win.

2018 North Andrew 56, South/Nodaway-Holt 54 – In this district playoff game, the Spartans came from a long ways down and were driving for what would have been the winning score. But North Andrew intercepted them in the end zone to preserve the win.

2018 Mound City 36, Worth County 32 – Worth County led much of the way after digging themselves into a 14-0 hole early, but Mound City completed a long pass in the last minute to set up their winning score.

2020 North Andrew 50, Albany 46 – North Andrew would go on to play in the State Championship game, but this game was a big confidence booster for Albany, who felt they could finally play with the big boys. Unfortunately, COVID shut down their season.

1990 Worth County 18, Mound City 12 – Nobody expected Worth County to win more than one or two games that year, but the Tigers made a goal line stand at the 1 yard line against a good Panther squad to get their first ever eight man win. This was the first of many such games between the two schools.

1995 Worth County over South Holt – South Holt was the powerhouse team of the early 1990’s, and games in that decade between the two schools were just as intense. Worth County made a late goal line stand against the Knights to preserve the win, and would go on to win their first ever state title.

2001 Worth County 48, Miami 40 – The Eagles had a star runningback and plenty of other weapons to challenge Worth County with. But the Tigers got ahead and then kept scoring to hold off Miami. With one minute left, Tiger Quarterback Chris Healy dove ahead for a first down to preserve Worth County’s third state title in four years.

1989 North Nodaway 24, West Nodaway 18 – The Rockets built up an 18-0 lead in the first half, but then North Nodaway chipped away, finally taking the lead in the fourth quarter as they bent, but didn’t break on defense. Finally, they used a late interception to preserve the win. They would go on to win state that year.

2007 Worth County 30, Mound City 22 – Worth County fell behind in this district semifinal game, but Logan Dignan, a reserve who ran out onto the field when Coach Borey needed an end, made a key one on one tackle on dual threat Taylor Sharp on an extra point try to keep Worth County’s deficit at one possession. Worth County took the lead in the third quarter, only for Mound City to tie it at 22. But in the closing seconds, a Drew Yarmer punt return set up a Kyler Hiatt run to put the Tigers ahead.

2019 Southwest Livingston 74, Pattonsburg 68 – This game featured one of the best all-time passers in Steven Willhite against one of the best all-time rushers in Mack Anderson. The game followed the South Shelby script; Pattonsburg got behind by a long ways, but then came to within six points before Southwest picked off Willhite in the end zone in the closing seconds to preserve the win.

2019 North/West Nodaway 58, LeBlond 52 – The Muskets moved up and down the field against LeBlond, as Karson Oberhauser broke the North Nodaway school single game rushing record, getting over 300 yards rushing. But LeBlond had a chance to win it at the end, driving down to the Musket 5 in the closing seconds before Tyler Bix got a pick in the end zone to preserve the win. This ended a 20 game losing streak for the Muskets.

2011 Sacred Heart 31, Mound City 26 – Sacred Heart, a Nebraska powerhouse, became the first team in six years besides Worth County to beat Mound City as they held them off in the final seconds.

1996 Stanberry 20, West Nodaway 12 – West Nodaway was supposed to be a juggernaut that year, but this was a big breakthrough win for Dan Collins’ squad. This was the year they established themselves as an eight man power.

2006 North Nodaway 26, West Nodaway 20 – West Nodaway had just beaten Worth County two weeks before, and just had to win in order to get into the playoffs. But North Nodaway, who was battered and bruised following a 38-24 loss to Worth County the week before, rose to the occasion and denied the Rockets. Worth County would beat Stanberry to get into the playoffs, where they would go on to become state runner-up.

Buses will also have assigned seating, with windows open when weather permits. Parents will screen students before they board the bus. Lunch shifts will increase, with some classes eating in their classrooms if necessary. Hand sanitizers will be provided, and proper hygiene will be taught. The school has purchased four sanitizing machines and will disinfect high volume areas, including each classroom once a day.

The board is in the process of developing goals for itself. Tentative goals include increased student achievement, positive student culture, technology, and meeting district and facility needs.

The board approved the service bids for the upcoming school year. Green Valley Pest Control received the bid for the pest control. Porter got the bid for the trash service. Anderson-Erickson got the bid for the milk.

The board approved change orders for the floor project, which is nearly done. They approved additional square footage for the boys locker room, additional curbs in the locker rooms, paint for the upper half of some of the walls, and additional restroom tile removal and flooring for Mr. Adwell’s office. The total changes came out to $7,392.

The board deactivated the credit card for Dr. Matt Martz and authorized cards for Healy, Mr. Borey, and tech specialist Emiley Maudlin. The board approved an agreement with Northeast Nodaway to transport its tech school students to Maryville.

The next meeting date for the Worth County School Board will be August 19th.

Basketball Court at Pool Park Nearing Completion

The basketball and volleyball court at the Grant City Pool Park is nearing completion, the Grant City Council learned at their regular meeting last Wednesday. The rubber for the court arrived Wednesday, Public Works Director Carl Staton reported, and the basketball coals will go up and the concrete for the sidewalk poured shortly. The city is still waiting on the volleyball poles. The city will purchase edging. The contractor will come back during the first or second week of August to put the rubber in.

Carl Staton provided a list of nine different residents not on city sewer. The city will look at options.

The city is planning on revising its zoning ordinances down the road, after the sewer project is completed.

Kevin Fisher has been hired as the new Economic Developer by the Worth County Extension and the Worth County Progress Organization. One of his first acts is to get a group of several people outside Sheridan hooked up to rural water.

Staton reported that the city had a main break on the square. The county helped haul dirt, since the city dump trucks are not operational. The second dump truck broke down recently. Staton is in the process of finding a new one.

The county is in the process of getting bids for the equipment grant.

The council voted to authorize Staton to purchase up to $10,000 worth of cold mix.

The council voted to approve the rental of a 135 foot lift truck to repair the water tower leak at a cost of $1,370.

The city is thinking of running a use tax ordinance, to collect use tax from Internet sales. It would not raise peoples’ taxes, which already go to the state. It would authorize the state to remit a portion of use tax revenue back to the city.

The council set their meeting date for August 18th. Before the regular meeting at 6:30, there will be a public hearing at 6 for the CDBG Grant for the sewer.

Councilwoman Charlotte Jones reported that she has received positive feedback regarding the swim lessons at the pool. Around 15-17 people are attending the water aerobics class Tuesday and Thursday evenings. They have had one pool party, with one more scheduled. People have expressed interest in a cleanup day at the park. The city is looking into a grand opening for the basketball and volleyball court.

Cissy Fletchall reported she is stalled in her cleanup efforts. She is having trouble getting a dumpster, getting KCP&L to do tree trimming, or getting the county equipment, since the county is replacing the Dannar Bridge between Grant City and Worth. The city does not have a claw to remove roofs.

The city went into closed session at 7:55 pm and ended the session at 9 pm.

Tiger Team of 2017 Rated Among Best Eight Man Teams

The Missouri Eight Man Coaches Association asked about some of the best eight man football teams ever. Worth County’s team of 2017 was listed by several people on Facebook as one of the best teams they have seen. That team went unbeaten and beat Sacred Heart in the State Championship game. They were ranked as one of the top six, eight, or nine man teams nationally on Max Preps.

Among other teams listed, along with some of our picks:

–North Andrew 2020;

–Mound City 2005, 2008, and 2016-19. One poster stated about the 16-19 teams, “You could keep up for a quarter or two, and it was over after that.” He mentioned the Poppa boys, T.J. Hopkins, the Marrs boys, Dylan George, and Walker Ross.

–Worth County 1995 and Nodaway-Holt 1995; the Trojans had been down for the last few years after their state title runs of 1990 and 1991; however, after losing their first game to Worth County, they didn’t lose another game for the rest of the season. Meanwhile, Worth County, behind P.J. Sanders, rewrote the passing records along with receivers such as Nate Combs, Daniel Gladstone, and Ben Fletcher. The two teams met in the playoffs in the snow, and Worth County prevailed and went on to beat North Andrew for the state championship.

–Miami 1988; that team started off 0-7 and had five kids kicked off for grades and were down to 17 players. But the playoffs brought a shocking turn of events. First, they beat DeKalb and Missouri School of the Deaf to win districts. Then, they successfully invaded North Andrew before falling to South Holt in the finals.

–1990 and 1991 Nodaway-Holt, 1994 Fairfax, and the South Holt teams of the late 1980’s and early 1990’s.

–Southwest Livingston 2020; that team completely rebuilt after losing the top rusher in the state in Mack Anderson from the year before and won state.

–Worth County 1998; Bobby McCutcheon posted that was the best eight man defense he ever saw or played on, and the offense was strong as well. That squad shut out five different opponents that year. That team started a dynastic run in which they won the 2000 and 2001 titles and won 28 straight games.

Not Posted On, but Deserving of Mention:

Not mentioned in the Facebook comments, but deserving of a shoutout were the 2007 and 2011 Tigers. Kyler Hiatt and the 2007 squad faced Taylor Sharp and Mound City in the cold and won 30-22 on a last-second score by Hiatt. In 2011, Worth County went to the Dome in St. Louis and beat Mound City again.

Pattonsburg 2019; Steven Willhite and the Panthers rewrote the passing recordbook along with receivers Cameron Jones, Brett Emig, and Dakota Eaton. He was ranked both statewide and nationally.

North/West Nodaway 2014; that squad dropped its first two games, but then proceeded to tear up the league behind quarterback Kobe Reynolds and receivers Trevor Meyer, Jakob Cordell, and Dakota Smyser.

North Nodaway 1989; that team had a devastating line and backfield. Observers kept thinking that squad could be beat, until they actually played them and learned the hard way. In the District Championship game that year, they fell behind 18-0 against archrival West Nodaway, only to turn around and win 24-18 after stopping a last minute drive.

Stanberry and North Andrew 2012-16; In 2012, Stanberry finally broke through and won a state title after Worth County had barred the way for so many years. That started off a series of rivalry games between Stanberry and North Andrew, in which North Andrew won in 2013, 2014, and 2016 while Stanberry won in 2012 and 2015. The closest game between the two was the 2015 game, in Stanberry made a goal line stand at the 1 to preserve the win.

Hopkins Declares Mutti Building, Ferrell Gas Building Unsafe

The City of Hopkins declared the Mutti Building and the Ferrell Gas building next to it as unsafe at the regular City Council Meeting Monday. The city has already placed cones around it and plans to block the sidewalk and the area around the building for the Hopkins Picnic. Since it is not an emergency situation, the owner will have 60 days from the receipt of notice to fix or demolish the building. If the owner does not comply, the city can proceed with further action.

The city will not attempt to demolish the old bank vault north of Barnard Street where the 102 Valley Bank used to be for now, since it says it doesn’t pose an immediate hazard. The council approved planting grass along that area.

The pump and the waste basin went out; the basin had one foot full of sludge, which the city cleaned.

The council voted to close off the streets for the Hopkins Picnic next month.

The council voted to move the meeting date to August 9th. The tax hearing will also be held that day.

The city had four calls from people regarding oil from the asphalt on city streets getting on peoples’ cars. Roseberry was the worst street. The city has been sweeping the streets.

The city also got complains about mud being tracked into the bar from runoff. The city will put asphalt on a stretch from 3rd & Barnard to Roseberry.

Sheridan Rescinds No Parking Ordinance

The Sheridan City Council rescinded a No Parking Ordinance Sunday that they had passed during their June meeting. Mayor Ashley Rush refused to sign off on it, and council members Candy Martin and Larry Musick said they weren’t voting for it. Martin said the ordinance presented at Sunday‘s meeting didn’t have an ordinance number on it, and that she hadn’t seen the DOT study. The ordinance would have affected the north side of Route 246 between Route H and 3rd Street.

Councilwoman Mary Jo Riley said that she had gotten calls from multiple people wanting the study in question. The area in question is on DOT right of way, which means they could put up a “No Parking” sign, not subject to council approval.

Barry Lyle, who was at the meeting, said a “No Parking” ordinance would be detrimental to his business, as he frequently goes across the street to work on customers’ cars. Tyler Paxson, also at the meeting, said it would hurt Community Building events.

The city said that people were responsible for their own brush removal. The former DOT building is now private property, and people do not have permission to dump their brush there.

Council members and Mayor Rush agreed to lock the doors to the park bathroom due to vandalism, except for community events. There were two vandalisms this year.

Opinion -- USDA to Review “Product of the USA” Label

By the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced a top-to-bottom review of the "Product of the USA" (POTUSA) label, which will inform a forthcoming rulemaking on this topic. Missouri Cattlemen's Association has long advocated for voluntary labels that meet consumer demand and allow producers to distinguish their products in the marketplace.

The National Cattlemen's Beef Association recently filed a petition with USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) to eliminate the use of POTUSA and other broad U.S. origin labeling claims for beef products. NCBA commends USDA for the prompt action to address industry concerns regarding the misleading nature of this generic label.

"The 'Product of the USA' label is not subject to source verification, is not tied to any kind of food safety standard, and is applied by packers and retailers in a manner that does not deliver value back to the cattle producer. This label not only misleads consumers, it is yet another barrier to producers gaining leverage and distinguishing their product in the marketplace," said NCBA President Jerry Bohn.

Local leadership reflects that perspective.

"Missouri cattle producers have spoken out against misleading labels and source labeling mandates for years," said MCA President Patty Wood. "We believe in honest and transparent labeling and look forward to finding solutions that are fair to both producers and consumers."

USDA's announcement came after the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) held a public hearing on FTC-2020-0056, Made in USA Rulemaking, Matter No. P074204. The Commission voted 3-2 in favor of the final rule, to take effect 30 days after publication in the Federal Register. The new rule will strengthen FTC’s authority to enforce “Made in USA” labels. NCBA submitted comments on the proposed rule in 2020. NCBA's comments reminded the FTC that USDA has primary jurisdiction over all meat food product oversight activities, including the approval and verification of geographic and origin labeling claims.

New Superintendent, Chris Healy, Introduces Himself

By Superintendent Chris Healy

Dear Worth County R-III Students, Staff, Parents, and Fellow Tigers,

As the 2021-2022 school year approaches, I’m Chris Healy, and I would like to introduce myself and say that I am honored to be the new Superintendent at Worth County R-III. I am excited to take a big step in my career and lead the school district that has played a significant role in the majority of my life. The tradition and success of the school has and will continue to be made possible because of the caring and talented people in the building and the support of the school board and community.

I moved to Grant City in the fall of 1989 for the beginning of my kindergarten year. I graduated from high school in 2002 at Worth County R-III. After graduation, I attended Northwest Missouri State University and majored in Computer Science. While getting my degree, I knew that education was an avenue that I wanted to keep open so I also completed my mathematics education certification. I was fortunate to be offered a position to teach high school math at Worth County in the fall of 2006 and have been here ever since. While teaching and coaching I completed my Masters in K-12 Administration and Specialist in Superintendency, both from Northwest Missouri State University.

Worth County R-III has been an integral part of my life. First, as a student and child of an administrator and music teacher. Later, as a teacher, administrator, coach, parent, and community member. I am looking forward to the challenge of continuing the success of our district, as well as focusing on goals for improving the education of our students.

I have been fortunate to be able to be involved in the leadership of the district office over the past year to get acclimated to the new position. I would like to thank and congratulate Dr. Matthew Martz on his retirement and commend him on leaving the district in a good position. I admired his passion of being a lifelong learner with a growth mindset and will strive to continue myself.

During the summer, there is always extensive work going on to take care of our facilities. The custodial and maintenance staff do a tremendous job and take pride in keeping our facilities safe and looking good. We are currently in the process of a large flooring project throughout the school. We are excited to complete the project and get people in the building to see the improvements early in the fall for the start of the school year. Be on the lookout for an open house date to see the improvements. The first day of school is August 24.

Again, I am extremely honored and excited to be the new Superintendent at Worth County R-III. Our mission is to, “... equip students with the character traits and academic skills to be productive, caring, problem-solving adults in our society.” With our 275 students, highly qualified and caring staff, administration, board of education, and a supportive community, I feel like we are in a position to continue to produce students that are ready to be productive members of our communities.

Go Tigers!

Family Donates to Worth County Fairgrounds Association

The Worth County Fairgrounds Assn. has received a donation from the family of the late Allen Davidson in memory of their father who was a local farmer and a former Worth County Farm Bureau board member.  Mr. Davidson was an enthusiastic supporter of our local 4-H and FFA youth and participated in many area events with his horse-drawn equipment.

In the fall of 1994, the county Farm Bureau board discussed procuring land and developing a “Fairgrounds” facility in the county with an emphasis on use as a 4-H and FFA Junior Livestock facility. Over the years, various groups had “looked into” procuring a permanent fairgrounds.  Board member Allen Davidson told of at least one serious discussion approximately 40 years before about the need for a fairgrounds, and he himself had been a part of an unsuccessful attempt in the more recent past. Those various efforts had “gone nowhere” but the need was still there. The Farm Bureau Board was unanimous in its support of the project and its willingness to put feet to the effort to find a property and get it developed. Allen served on the committee to search out a suitable property and those initial efforts resulted in what is today’s Worth County Fairgrounds.

The Worth County Fairgrounds Association would like to thank the Davidson family for their memorial gift, but especially for the encouragement and support that Allen gave to the fairgrounds project.
