Shamrock JH Boys Hold Off Frantic Tiger Rally

North Harrison’s junior high boys erased a halftime lead by Worth County, pulled away to as much as an 18 point lead, and then had to hold off a frantic Worth County rally in the last 1:30 before winning 32-24 to go 4-1. This includes quality wins over Mercer, South Harrison, and Pattonsburg, with only a last-second loss to Winston.

Worth County got off to a fast start with a drive and a 3-pointer by Brayden Stevens and a free throw from Franklynn Hoff to go up 6-2 before Keygun Johnson hit a guarded three at the buzzer to bring the Shamrocks to within 6-5.

The two teams traded buckets in the second half as Stevens hit a 3-pointer and Hoff got a putback, but North Harrison countered with a transition basket from Ethan Henson and another play in which Jerry Gilpatrick bulldozed his way to the basket after getting a pass from Dustin Hamilton.

Worth County led 10-9 at the half. Turnovers were hurting the Shamrocks, but they killed Worth County on the boards to stay with them.

North Harrison finally took control and gained some separation in the third as they began forcing turnovers themselves and Keygun Johnson took over for them. Jerry Gilpatrick opened with a putback, then Johnson found Evan Schreiber backdoor and Johnson hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key after Kolton Graham kept a possession alive with an offensive board. Then, Karsyn Ury got a tip, Kolton Graham got a steal, and then Evan Schreiber fed Johnson for a layup, and then Johnson added a free throw. Then, Johnson grabbed a defensive board, went coast to coast, and fed Jerry Gilpatrick to make it 21-10 before Brayden Stevens finally stopped the bleeding with a free throw to make it 21-11.

Worth County hung with North Harrison for a while in the fourth, but then with Worth County pressing to try to get the ball back, Keygun Johnson beat the press after getting a pass from Karsyn Ury, Jerry Gilpatrick hit two free throws, and Ethan Henson converted a 3-point play to seemingly put North Harrison in control up 32-14 with 1:43 left.

But then a light switch flipped on and Cannon Fletcher hit a 3-pointer to keep Worth County’s hopes alive. Carter Chapman scored from inside, and then Franklynn Hoff hit a shot from the high post and added a 3-pointer from the top of the key to make it 32-24 with 17.6 seconds left. North Harrison managed to dribble several seconds off the clock, but then Worth County stole the ball and had a chance to get to within 5 or 6 as time expired.

Keygun Johnson had 11 points, Jerry Gilpatrick 10, Ethan Henson 5, Evan Schreiber 4, and Karsyn Ury 2 for the Shamrocks.

For Worth County, Franklynn Hoff had 10, Brayden Stevens 9, Cannon Fletcher 3, and Carter Chapman 2.
