Bluejay Boys Rally Against Stanberry Falls Short by Six

Northeast Nodaway’s boys struggled against a Stanberry team that was swarming, pressing, and trapping throughout the night and they couldn’t figure out how to handle it until they fourth quarter. By that time, they were down 31-15. Finally, they realized they could play basketball with them, and they cut their deficit to five at one point before they fell 36-30 last Tuesday.

The Bluejays turned the ball over ten times in the first quarter, and all hell broke loose in the first half as Stanberry led by as much as 17-3 before the Bluejays finally started to find the range. Landon Wilmes went coast to coast on one play and Jake Redden kept the Bluejays in the game with four late first half points as they closed to within 20-9 by the half.

The Bluejays started off well in the second half as Ethan Gascoigne, who had been scoreless in the first half, finally found the range to cut it to 22-13 at the 4:04 mark of the third. But then Stanberry resumed swarming, pressing, and trapping Northeast, growing their lead to as much as 31-15 by the end of the third.

But all of a sudden, Northeast figured out that they could press them back, and Ethan Gascoigne, who had been held to two points through three quarters, finally rediscovered his touch. He got untracked with a pair of free throws, and Landon Wilmes scored off a steal. Drew Dack scored from the right wing, and Ethan Gascoigne added a free throw, and all of a sudden, the Stanberry lead was under double digits again at 31-22.

Calvin Smithson countered with a guarded shot in the high post, but then Drew Dack hit Gascoigne backdoor and Landon Wilmes added a layup after Drew Dack and Wilmes got tips and Wilmes got the steal to make it 33-26.

Colby McQueen countered with a steal to temporarily restore order for Stanberry and make it 35-26, but Gascoigne countered with a putback and Drew Dack scored off a drive to make it 35-30 with one minute left. Northeast got a steal and a chance to make it one possession, but they had a miss and a turnover in the last 41 seconds.

Ethan Gascoigne had 9 points for the Bluejays. Drew Dack had 8, Landon Wilmes and Jake Redden 6, and Jacob Meyer 1.

Jake Redden had a blocked shot.

Jake Redden had 8 boards. Ethan Gascoigne had 6, Jacob Meyer 3, Drew Dack, Landon Wilmes, and Brady Cox 2 each, and Gaige Bodle 1.

Ethan Gascoigne and Drew Dack had 3 assists each.

Landon Wilmes had 6 tips. Drew Dack had 5, Jake Redden 2, and Jacob Meyer 1.

Drew Dack had 6 steals. Landon Wilmes had 4, Ethan Gascoigne 3, Jake Redden 2, and Jacob Meyer 1.
