The Worth County school is in the process of dealing with the loss of student Cody Schrock, who was killed in a car accident Friday evening. Monday morning, clergy from the area churches met with faculty, administrators, and staff. At 7:30 am, an all-faculty meeting was held to help the teachers communicate to the students about the tragedy. Four social workers from Maryville donated their time that day and were on hand at the school all day in order to help teachers and students; area pastors were on hand as well. The school had a roaming sub on hand in case teachers needed to talk with one of the counselors. There were activities done with the elementary students as well; Cody had read to the 3rd graders this year. The scheduled basketball game with Nodaway-Holt will be played; Superintendent Mike Rennells said that it was important for the students to have a positive experience under their belts that day. Rennells said in a letter to parents that the goal will be to return to a normal routine as the situation and people allow.
There will be no school tomorrow, January 22nd so that students and teachers can attend the funeral. Assistant Principal Chuck Borey said as of Monday morning that the school had not decided on a make-up day. He said that teachers and students were coping well that morning considering what had happened.
