Sage DeLong’s Career Night Lifts NEN Boys

Sage DeLong had a career night, getting 12 points, and the Northeast Nodaway boys got back on the winning track over CFX, one game after losing their heartbreaker to North Andrew Friday night. The Bluejays were playing shorthanded as they were without Joel Scroggie. Kevin Stoll battled foul trouble the whole way and only managed five points. That meant that the other post players had to step up their game, and they did. Aaron Patton remained a constant for Northeast, getting 17 points after a slow start. Balanced scoring on offense and strong defense were the recipe for recovering from a loss. Steve Schulte was a force on defense, getting five rejections as the team had 9 for the night. Sage DeLong had three and Kevin Stoll added one.

Sage DeLong opened the scoring with a pair of putbacks for Northeast and Garet Jackson then picked up where he left off at North Andrew, hitting a 3-pointer. Kevin Stoll got a backdoor layup as Northeast got the first nine points of the game. But as Aaron Patton was missing everything he threw up, CFX fought back to tie at 9 early in the second behind the play of Grant Hopkins.

But then Northeast switched from a zone to a man and Patton got untracked by going back to his strength, stealing the ball and getting loose in the open court. He scored the next seven points for Northeast and then Shaun Burns scored off a drive and Tyler Schmitz connected in the high post. He scored the last five points of the quarter for Northeast as they built up a 23-10 lead at the half.

Northeast was missing a lot of easy looks in the third quarter and CFX was able to come to as close as eight at one point. But the Bluejays kept in front by getting a lot of transition looks against the press that CFX put on to try and get the ball back and get back into the game. Aaron Patton had four in the quarter off a fast break going against the press and a steal. Steve Schulte added another score off a steal and Sage DeLong and Garet Jackson also got behind the press as Northeast led 33-23 after three quarters.

Northeast had one of their most productive quarters of the year in putting up 24 in the fourth quarter to put the game away. Aaron Patton and Sage DeLong had six each in the period. Aaron went coast to coast on a fast break to start off the quarter and then scored off a drive and then got behind the press for his points.

Sage DeLong added a pair of free throws and scored off a fast break and one off a Steve Schulte steal as he cleaned off an Aaron Patton miss. Kevin Stoll lasted long enough in the fourth quarter to hit a 3-pointer off a Patton kickout before fouling out. Steve Schulte hit a layup after a defender gambled for a steal and missed and also added a free throw and three blocks on defense to thwart any comeback attempts. Garet Jackson added a free throw. Northeast led by as much as 52-32 before they put in the reserves. Shaun Burns hit a pair of free throws, Austin Jones got behind the press for a layup, and Andrew Faustlin hit a free throw for the reserves.
