Taryn Farnan, Holly Redden Power NEN Girls Past Stewartsville

Northeast Nodaway's girls had every reason to be wary of a trap game Friday night. Last year, the Bluejays beat the Cardinals by 17 early in the year, only to stumble and lose to them by one in the regular season meeting between the two teams. But there was no contest this time as Stewartsville was without their post player Ashley Schultz, who Northeast did not have an answer to last time. Taryn Farnan and Holly Redden had 10 each as Northeast easily won 39-12 Friday night.

Northeast has now won three straight and is now nearly back to full strength. They lost Kristan Judd for the game (concussion), but they got back Claudia Wiederholt (concussion) and Talina Nelson (foot), who saw her first action of the year in the fourth quarter of Friday's game.

Last year, Stewartsville killed Northeast on the boards behind Schultz, but without her, it was the other way around. Northeast collected 12 offensive boards in the first quarter as they raced out to a 16-0 first quarter lead. They had their most productive quarter of the year in racing out to the lead. Taryn Farnan scored the first five points of the game in the first two and a half minutes, opening up everything else as she found room to operate. Holly Redden hit two 3-pointers and Claudia Wiederholt, back from her concussion, called a 3-pointer from the corner shot that turned out to be nothing but net. It was that kind of rare night for Northeast. Jill Spire added a putback.

From there, Northeast's press kept Stewartsville from getting any kind of rhythm offensively as they continued to pull away for the next two quarters. In the second quarter, Kerrigan Adwell led the scoring with a drive and a steal as four different Bluejays scored. Taryn Farnan added an inside shot, Dallis Coffelt added a steal, and Holly Redden, whose pregame shots always seemed to have her foot barely on the line, added an outside shot. Northeast scored 22 unanswered points before Stewartsville finally got on the board. Northeast led 26-3 at the half.

Six different players scored for Northeast in the third quarter as Stewartsville could only muster a free throw and a 3-pointer. Holly Redden added another baseline shot. Taryn Farnan got a free throw and a cut inside. Dallis Coffelt went coast to coast for two points, Claudia Wiederholt got a steal off the press, and Brianna Riley, who rebounded well for the game, added a free throw as Northeast led 38-7 after three. Jill Spire added a free throw in the fourth quarter as most of it was dominated by the running clock.
