It was a big day for Worth County track last week as three different Tiger teams won conference, while the varsity girls finished a strong second. The Tiger boys, junior high boys, and junior high girls all won their meets. For the varsity boys, the Tigers edged out a loaded field at Christian. In the varsity girls meet, Worth County and Trenton were neck and neck and had little competition for the top two spots. The junior high girls edged out Albany for the top spot, well above what everyone had expected of them at the start of the year. The junior high boys won handily, running away with the field in Albany.
Varsity Boys
In a loaded field that saw seven different teams score 51 points or more, Worth County’s boys won their first GRC Title since 2005 and 10th overall. Worth County had 102 points, Putnam County 85, Polo 78.5, Princeton 78, Trenton 77, Pattonsburg 57, Milan 51, Stanberry 45, Gallatin 37, North Andrew 26.5, Braymer 24, St. Joseph Christian 21, Albany 16, King City 15, Maysville 14, and South Harrison 14.
In the 100, Andrew Alarcon was fifth with a time of 12.39. Daniel Craven was sixth in the 3200 with a time of 12:03.98. Bryant McCord won the 110 Hurdles with a time of 16.64, almost .9 of a second ahead of his nearest competition. McCord was third in the 300 Hurdles with a time of 43.77.
The 4x100 team of Andrew Alarcon, Tevin Cameron, Caleb Parman, and Bryant McCord had one of their best times of the year, but they were edged out by Putnam County and finished second. Worth County finished with a time of 46.70 to Putnam County’s 45.63. The 4x200 team of Bryant McCord, Tevin Cameron, Ryan McClellan, and Andrew Alarcon was second as well, getting a time of 1:37.63. The 4x400 team of Wayde Parman, Ryan McClellan, Andrew Alarcon, and Caleb Parman was eighth with a time of 3:57.83. The 4x800 team of Jeremy Wimer, Wayde Parman, Nate Adwell, and Daniel Craven was eighth with a time of 10:32.04.
The Tigers placed two in the Pole Vault as Nate Adwell was second with a height of 11’6” and Jeremy Wimer matched a personal best with a height of 9’6”, good enough for fourth place. Caleb Parman was fifth in the Long Jump with a jump of 18’10”. Tevin Cameron was eighth with a jump of 18’6”. Jaxon Anderson was fourth in the Triple Jump with a jump of 39’7½”. Caleb Parman was eighth with a jump of 37’8½”.
Worth County didn’t get their usual points in the Shot Put as Trenton brought a strong pair of throwers who finished 1-2 in the event. Drake Kinsella was third with a throw of 44’7”, while Mason Hawk was seventh with a throw of 41’3”. Both Tiger throwers threw well in the Discus. Drake Kinsella was second with a throw of 139 feet. Mason Hawk was third with a throw of 131’8”, his best throw of the year. Tevin Cameron raised the Worth County school record in the Javelin, getting a winning throw of 155’2”. Jacob New was fourth with a throw of 135 feet.
Varsity Girls
The varsity girls were neck and neck with Trenton and finished second with little competition from the rest of the field. Even Stanberry, with whom Worth County has been neck and neck all year, was left behind. Trenton had 135 team points, while Worth County had 120.5, Stanberry 88.5, St. Joseph Christian 78, Braymer 73, Putnam County 63, King City 31.5, Maysville 26, Polo 26, Gallatin 25, Princeton 18, South Harrison 17.5, Albany 17, North Andrew 15, and Milan 5.
Jill Hardy knocked over 10 seconds off her time in the 400 and finished in a dead heat for seventh with a time of 1:05.35. Braidy Hunt got a personal best in the 800 and finished fifth with a time of 2:42.13. Kristin New was seventh in the 3200 with a time of 15:25.92.
The girls were carried Tuesday by Anna Gladstone, who won three events and got a personal best in the fourth. Anna Gladstone won handily in the 100 Hurdles and got a time of 16.93, beating out her nearest competitor by over .9 of a second. Morgan Beagle was fourth with a time of 18.56. Anna also won by over 1.3 seconds in the 300 Hurdles with a time of 51.63. Morgan Beagle was sixth with a time of 58.55.
The 4x100 team of Navada Hoff, Morgan Beagle, Jessi Badell, and Liz Lyle was fifth with a time of 56.81. The 4x400 team of Braidy Hunt, Megan Cassavaugh, Jill Hardy, and Kristin New was fifth with a time of 4:56.81. The 4x800 team of Braidy Hunt, Megan Cassavaugh, Allison Larison, and Kristin New was second with a time of 11:03.56.
Anna Gladstone was third in the High Jump, but matched a personal best with a height of 5’2”. Liz Lyle was fourth with a jump of 4’10”. Regan Allee was third in the Pole Vault with a height of 9 feet. Jessi Badell was fourth with a height of 8 feet. Anna Gladstone’s third win was in the Long Jump, where she came close to her personal best and the school record she holds with a jump of 17’1½”. Liz Lyle was third with a jump of 15’5”. The Tigers placed two in the Triple Jump as Liz Lyle was second with a jump of 31’5” and Jill Hardy was sixth with a jump of 29’7½”, close to a personal best.
Worth County got their points in the throwing events as Merrideth Spiers excelled. Spiers got a personal best with a winning throw of 37’10”, over three feet better than her nearest competition in the Shot Put. Spiers also won handily in the Discus, getting a throw of 120’2”.
Junior High Girls
Worth County’s junior high girls continued to surprise, winning over a loaded field in which every team in the GRC West finished with at least 31 team points. Worth County had 86, Albany 80, King City 75, Stanberry 55, North Andrew 51, St. Joseph Christian 47, Braymer 36, and Pattonsburg 31. Worth County got a critical victory by Aivry Griffin in the 100 Hurdles, a 1-2 finish in the Pole Vault, and a 1-2-3 finish in the Triple Jump to get the win.
Aivry Griffin was third in the 200 with a time of 32.97. Hailey Adwell won the 800 with a time of 2:50.92, an event that she won by over 4 seconds. She returns next year, as she is only in 7th grade. Griffin had one of the most exciting races of the day Thursday, beating out Jillian Plymell (Pattonsburg) in the 100 Hurdles with a time of 18.53 to Plymell’s 18.53.
The 4x100 team of Aivry Griffin, ZeeAnna Gladstone, Justina Wimer, and Hailey Adwell was seventh with a time of 1:02.68. The 4x400 team of ZeeAnna Gladstone, Alison Anderson, Molly Miller, and Hailey Adwell was fifth with a time of 5:19.37.
Aivry Griffin was tied for fifth in the High Jump with a height of 4’2”. The Tigers were 1-2 in the Pole Vault as Claire McElvain won with a height of 7 feet. Molly Miller was second with a height of 6’6”. Both were personal bests. Justina Wimer was sixth in the Long Jump with a jump of 13 feet. The Tigers got the top three finishes in the Triple Jump. Justina Wimer won with a jump of 28’1¾”.
Ali Brown was second with a jump of 27’9½”, and ZeeAnna Gladstone was third with a jump of 27 feet.
Ali Brown was third in the Shot Put with a throw of 29’9”. Olivia Kanak was second in the Discus with a throw of 71’2½”.
Junior High Boys
The Junior High Tigers ran away with the meet, getting 130 team points. King City had 84, Albany 81, North Andrew 66, Braymer 46, Stanberry 37, St. Joseph Christian 13, and Pattonsburg 5.
Aydan Gladstone was fifth in the 200 with a time of 28.63. Alex Rinehart won the 400 with a time of 1:02.94. Levi Cassavaugh was third with a time of 1:04.89. Josh Freed was third in the 800 with a time of 2:36.37. The Tigers were 1-2 in the 100 Hurdles as Jace Cousatte won with a time of 17.62, while Aydan Gladstone was second with a time of 18.28.
The 4x100 team of Jon Galanakis, Lucas Wake, Aydan Gladstone, and Levi Cassavaugh was fourth with a time of 54.96. The 4x200 team of Jon Galanakis, Josh Freed, Lucas Wake, and Jackson Runde was third with a time of 1:55.14. The 4x400 team of Jon Galanakis, Jackson Runde, Josh Freed, and Levi Cassavaugh was third with a time of 4:27.43.
Jace Cousatte was tied for second in the High Jump with a jump of 4’10”. Lucas Wake was sixth, also with a jump of 4’10”. The Tigers were 1-2 in the Pole Vault as Aydan Gladstone won with a vault of 9’6” and Lincoln Moore was second with a vault of 8 feet. Alex Rinehart was second in the Long Jump with a jump of 17’2”, while Jon Galanakis was fifth with a time of 15’2½”. Alex Rinehart won the Triple Jump with a jump of 36’1”. Two other Tigers placed as Jace Cousatte was third with a jump of 32’9” and Josh Freed was fourth with a jump of 31’3”.
Jackson Runde was fifth in the Shot Put with a throw of 31’7”. Runde, who missed all three of his throws at the Tiger Relays, returned to form in Albany with a winning throw of 120’3”. Colt Cameron was fourth with a throw of 79’1½”.

Jayliegh Robins Wins Twice at Worth County
Jayliegh Robins won twice at the Junior High Tiger Relays for North Harrison Thursday, taking first in both the 200 and the 400 as she continued her rapid improvement in those two events. North Harrison finished the event with 26 team points.
In a thrilling race in the 200, Robins held off Kayley Hauber (Platte Valley), knocked another second off her time in that event from the HDC meet, and won with a time of 28.42. She beat out Hauber much more easily in the 400, winning by almost three seconds and knocking 1.5 seconds off her time to win by 1:04.42.
By way of comparison, Robins, only in 7th grade, would have finished second in the high school Cardinal Relays, held the same day in similar weather and conditions, with only standout Grace Schottel (King City), who has won nearly all of her events in the 100, 200, and 400, ahead of her.

Paige West broke the NEN School Record in the Long Jump Friday at the Panther Relays in Mound City. Northeast Nodaway had 27 team points on the girls side and 28 more on the boys side that day.
In the event, West beat her personal best mark by 2 feet and won with a jump of 16’10”, beating out Anna Gladstone (Worth County), who had 16’7½”, along with Marissa Jensen (Stanberry), at 16’3”. The old mark was held by teammate Brea Coulter, who got a jump of 16’9” last year.
West was also fourth in the 100 Hurdles, getting a personal best time of 17.59. She was third in the 300 Hurdles, coming close to a personal best with a time of 53.74.
The 4x200 team of Zayla Carlson, Saige Kohlleppel, Angela Standiford, and Victoria Moran was sixth with a personal best time of 2:03.93. Madelynn Mattson got a personal best in the Shot Put by over four feet, getting a third place finish of 32’5½”.
For the boys, Dylan Mildfeldt continued to win in the 100, getting a time of 11.50. Nathan Schieber was sixth in the 800 with a time of 2:21.56.

Worth County’s boys won the Mound City meet Friday, while the girls were edged out by one point against a loaded field Friday. The boys had 123 team points to lead the pack. Mound City had 90, East Atchison 78, South/Nodaway-Holt 73, Stanberry 61, Platte Valley 55, Rock Port 33, St. Joseph Christian 31, NEN 28, and North/West Nodaway 14. For the girls, Mound City had 92 team points. Worth County had 91, Stanberry 81, Rock Port 75, Platte Valley 64, St. Joseph Christian 51, DeKalb 37.5, East Atchison 31, NEN 27, South/Nodaway-Holt 19.5, Osborn 9, Tri-County 5, and North/West Nodaway 4.
For the girls, Braidy Hunt was fifth in the 800 with a time of 2:42.12. Anna Gladstone won handily in the 100 Hurdles, getting a season best time of 16.07 and beating her nearest rival by almost 1.2 seconds. Gladstone was edged out again by Abbe Hale (Rock Port) in the 300 Hurdles, getting second. However, she got a personal best time of 49.78. Morgan Beagle was fifth with a time of 55.20.

North Harrison’s Junior High Shamrock girls were edged out by three points at the HDC Meet in Bethany Thursday. Tri-County won with 102 team points. North Harrison had 99, Gilman City 50, Mercer 50, Winston 45, Grundy County 29, and East Harrison 1.
Deva Wallace was fifth in the 100 with a time of 15.45. Jayliegh Robins kept improving her times in the 200 and 400, winning both events. In the 200, she won handily with a time of 29.67, almost 1.7 seconds ahead of her nearest rival. In the 400, she won by over seven seconds ahead of her nearest rival, getting a time of 1:07.38, a varsity level time. Halle Morgan was fourth in the 1600 with a time of 7:12.93.
The 4x100 team edged out Tri-County by one tenth of a second, getting a time of 1:00.54. The 4x400 team was second with a time of 5:59.82.

Shamrock Boys Are 2018 HDC Track Champions
North Harrison’s boys won the third conference title of the year for the school, winning the HDC Meet Wednesday. Previously, the girls softball team and girls basketball team won it. The boys got 98 team points to win the meet. Winston had 95, Newtown-Harris 77, Gilman City 32, North Daviess 31, East Harrison 30, Grundy County 28, and Mercer 23. The girls finished third. East Harrison ran away with the girls title, getting 144 points, getting the first-ever title as a cooperative. Tri-County got 99, North Harrison 76, Grundy County 56, Winston 34, Newtown-Harris 28, and Gilman City 18.
For the girls, Payton Craig was fifth in the 200 with a time of 31.84. Vici Stellpflug was fourth in the 400 with a time of 1:16.90. Mardee Sadowsky was second in the 800 with a time of 2:51.43; Sadowsky won the 1600 with a time of 6:36.25.
The 4x400 team of Vici Stellpflug, Mardee Sadowsky, Emma Craig, and Payton Craig won with a time of 5:38.34.
Sadowsky was sixth in the High Jump with a height of 4 feet. Vici Stellpflug was sixth in the Long Jump with a jump of 10’9”. Payton Craig won the Triple Jump with a jump of 29’5”.
In the Shot Put, Emma Craig was second with a throw of 30’2”. She was also second in the Discus with a throw of 83’3”. Payton Craig continued to dominate the Javelin, getting a winning throw of 110’9”.
For the boys, Connor Stobbe got a personal best and a second place finish in the 100 with a time of 12.43. The 4x400 team of Vici Stellpflug, Mardee Sadowsky, Emma Craig, and Payton Craig won with a time of 5:38.34.

In the Shot Put, Emma Craig was second with a throw of 30’2”. She was also second in the Discus with a throw of 83’3”. Payton Craig continued to dominate the Javelin, getting a winning throw of 110’9”.

Shamrock Baseball Erupts for School Record 20 Runs Against Grundy County
North Harrison has gone on a tear recently. After their heartbreaking 8-7 loss to South Harrison on April 12th, the Shamrocks have won four out of their last five games to move above .500 at 7-6 pending the outcome of Monday’s game with Mercer. In all four of their wins, they have scored 12 or more runs; before this year, 12 runs was the most they had ever scored in a game. After breaking their record for runs scored with 14 against Trenton on March 17th, they topped it again on April 13th with an 18-2 win over Tri-County. They nearly matched that against Mercer/Princeton with a 16-2 victory on the 17th. Their one setback was on the 23rd against Class 3 powerhouse Lathrop, against whom they fell 13-0. They recovered on the 24th against Milan, breaking up a 4-4 tie and pulling away to win 12-4 before Thursday’s 20-4 win over Grundy County.
It looked at first like the Panthers would upset the applecart as they tagged Shamrock pitcher Tyler Lundy for two runs in the first. With one out, Austin Blair and Caden Gann both singled to left. Wayne Baxter walked to load the bases and then Jonathan Simpson doubled to the wall in right center to put the Panthers up 2-0.
But then Logan Huitt shot a hard grounder under third baseman Simpson’s legs to start off the Shamrock first. He stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. Grant Claycomb shot a double over the right fielder’s head, aided by the wind, to drive in Huitt and stole second. Brett Emig then homered to the right of the flagpoles to put the Shamrocks up 3-2 and erase their early deficit.
Logan Craig got a hard line drive to short for the first out, but then back to back walks to Timothy Heintz opened the floodgates for North Harrison. A double steal put them on second and third and Lane Huitt singled them both home to make it 5-2. Lane took second on a wild pitch and third on a steal. Hunter Parkhurst was called out on strikes, but Samuel Mejia drew a walk on a 3-2 count to keep North Harrison going. Lane Huitt scored on a wild pitch as Mejia took second; then, Mejia took third on yet another wild pitch. It was the fifth wild pitch that Grundy County threw in the inning. Logan Huitt walked and then Grant Claycomb homered to center, over the trees for a moon shot as the players left the dugout to prank him after he came in. When the dust had settled, North Harrison had jumped out to a 9-2 lead and was in control.
Lundy plunked Emma Baxter, the number nine hitter, with one out and the lineup turned over; however, Carter Searcy grounded out and Austin Blair, who had started the Panther first, struck out. Logan Craig started off and hit a pop fly to left center field that dropped in for a base hit. Collin Castleberry hit a line drive to right that dropped in for a single. Logan Craig was off on the pitch and scored all the way from first on the play to make it 10-2 after second.
The heart of the Panther order was up in the third and North Harrison first baseman Logan Craig dropped a throw as Caden Gann reached on an error to start. Wayne Baxter was called out on strikes, but Jonathan Simpson singled into the gap in left. Logan Huitt made a great play to cut it off to stop a run from scoring and deny extra bases. Bryson Gann hit a screamer, but right at Logan Craig for an out; he tried for a double play at second, but the ball got away, allowing Caden Gann to score and make it 10-3.
