Bluejay Boys Win Second Straight Behind Bentin Roberts

Northeast Nodaway’s boys have fallen on hard times lately, with their last winning season coming in  the 2021-22 season. But on Tuesday, February 3rd, they put together a rare winning streak when they beat Union Star 52-37 on the road to win their second straight game behind Bentin Roberts. Bentin had 17 points, 10 rebounds, and 8 assists, narrowly missing a triple double for the Bluejays.

The Bluejays raced out to a 7-2 lead behind Liam Cordell’s transition three from the left side. But Union Star hung around for the rest of the first quarter, closing to within 9-8 after Wyatt Jackson’s free throws. Bentin Roberts’ free throw put the Bluejays up 10-8 after one.

Northeast finally got some separation when Bentin Roberts converted a steal into two free throws and followed up with another. Liam Cordell, who has been adding to his game and is no longer the one-dimensional 3-point shooter that he was earlier, slashed and scored to make it 16-8. Cordell got loose in transition and got two free throws and added a triple to make it 21-10.

Four straight from the Trojans cut it to 21-14, but the Bluejays built it back up to 11 when Liam Cordell countered with his third triple of the half and Lance Runde added a free throw to make it 25-14.

But finishing off halves can turn a well-played game into an adventure, and Northeast got away from what was working and struggled to finish off the half. In the last 41 seconds, Wyatt Jackson slashed and scored for Union Star to open the floodgates for the Trojans. They added a 3-pointer, and Lake Klawuhn got a steal and layup at the buzzer to make it 25-21.

Sure enough, the Trojans continued the momentum into the second half as Jaxon Shoop slashed and scored and Wyatt Jackson knocked one down from the high post to knot it up at 25. Northeast Nodaway had to win it all over again.

The momentum went back to the Bluejays when Bentin Roberts drove and got the benefit of a charge/block call and scored with 5:02 left in the third to make it 27-25. He missed the free throw, but Northeast was swarming to the boards, and Wyatt Scadden converted a third-chance putback to convert a four point play and get himself going. He would go on to score 10 out of his 12 points in the second half.

As Union Star got into foul trouble in the third quarter, Northeast Nodaway started pulling away. After Aaron Pettijohn cut the Trojan deficit to 30-27, Bentin Roberts scored after Reece Gray aired it out. Bentin went coast to coast and converted it into two free throws. Roberts then aired one out to Liam Cordell, who converted it into two free throws. Wyatt Scadden scored twice in the last 15 seconds to make it 40-27, and Northeast would not lead by less than 11 for the rest of the game.

Liam Cordell had 18 points. Bentin Roberts had 17, Wyatt Scadden 12, and Lance Runde 3.
