Brock Healy Scores 21 as Tigers Win Second Straight

Worth County’s boys won their second straight as Brock Healy scored 21 points, all from behind the arc, as they crashed Mound City’s Courtwarming and won 55-41. The game was important for district seedings and allows the Tigers to stay at third in the seedings, setting up a likely matchup with North Nodaway. A win could have vaulted Mound City ahead of Worth County in the seedings and forced the Tigers to play a much tougher draw in Stanberry.  Platte Valley will likely draw the second seed and Rock Port the top seed.

The game was a match between two teams searching for consistency; Mound City has broken the 70-point barrier twice and the 60-point barrier on four other occasions. But there have been other games where they have struggled to reach 50.  Both versions were on display Monday night. Worth County, who has struggled to finish off games this year, built up a big enough lead that it didn’t matter Monday night, but then struggled down the last 5:25 of the game, not scoring a single point as Mound City had a frantic rally at the end.

The difference in their last two games was the fact that Worth County got more production out of their third through fifth players instead of just being a two-man team with Caleb New and Brock Healy. Cole Ruby got into double figures for the second straight night and stayed out of foul trouble. Ryder Smyser chipped in as well, getting six points and leading the Tigers in rebounding. While he didn’t score, Dylan Smith made some hustle plays, guarding well, getting six boards and keeping the ball moving with four assists.

Worth County got scoring from four different players in building up a 13-10 lead after one. Caleb New started off with a drive, then added a steal and fed Cole Ruby for two. Ernest Peters countered with a drive for Mound City, but Cole Ruby’s drive set up Ryder Smyser inside and Dylan Smith got the ball to Cole Ruby in transition to make it 8-2.

Mound City whittled it down to 10-8 after a three point play from Liam Derr, but Brock Healy got on the board with his first triple before Creyton Roup’s pullup at the buzzer pulled Mound City to within three.

Caleb New had the hot hand for Worth County early in the second, going backdoor and getting a pass from Cole Ruby and cashing in off a Ryder Smyser steal. Derr cut it to 17-12, but Cole Ruby lit it up from the wing for three, Caleb New added a free throw, Cole Ruby hit his second triple of the quarter, and Brock Healy added his second triple to make it 27-13 after one half.

Worth County continued to pull away in the third as Dylan Smith drove and set up Ryder Smyser inside. Ryder Smyser hit Caleb New backdoor, and Caleb finished with a reverse layup. Dylan Smith hit Brock Healy for three to make it 34-13 and push the margin over 20.

The Tigers led by as much as 37-15 in the third after Cole Ruby’s triple, but Mound City started pressing and speeding up the game. They got it as close as 41-25 before Brock Healy, with time winding down in the third quarter, drove around Ethan Lininger’s screen and pulled up for three to make it 44-25 after three.

Healy had the hot hand to start the fourth, lighting it up for three triples; Ryder Smyser added two  as Worth County led by as much as 55-27. But they struggled defensively down the stretch as Liam Derr hit a pullup and later grabbed an offensive board and hit an off-balance three. Creyton Roup added seven and Ernest Peters added a steal before Worth County was able to run out the clock for the win.
