Worth County has been searching for balance, but they rode Caleb New’s shooting to a 51-45 win over Bishop LeBlond Wednesday as the Tigers were scrambling to find games after the first two weeks of its season were canceled due to the State Football Championship.
The Golden Eagles, a Class 3 foe, got off to a good start, but have been streaky all year, having lost six out of their last seven coming into Wednesday’s matchup. Worth County’s last win against a Class 3 school was in 2022, when they beat South Harrison 49-42 when the Bulldogs were still playing in the Albany Tournament.
Caleb New had 40 points to lead the Tigers to victory. They dug themselves into a 12-4 hole against the Golden Eagles, but then realized they could play basketball with them and chipped away the whole game, finally catching up to them in the fourth quarter and passing them.
The all-time scoring record for the Tigers is 51 points by Kent Thompson in 1985 against Cainsville. Will Gladstone scored 43 points against South Harrison in 1989. Caleb’s outburst is the most since then. His previous career high was 30 against North Andrew earlier this year.
Caleb was 15 for 26 from the field. He was 10 for 20 from two point range, 5 for 6 from three point range, and 5 for 9 from the line.
Brock Healy had 5, Brayden Combs 3, Jordan Dannar 2, and Cole Ruby 1.
Caleb New and Ryder Smyser had 8 boards. Dylan Smith followed with 6. Dylan Smith had 4 assists and Cole Ruby had 3.
