Levi Youtsey Grabs 1,000th Board as Redbirds Keep Shamrock Boys in Tailspin

After their impressive win over North Nodaway to start the season, North Harrison's boys have been in a tailspin. They played against Maysville in the first round of the Gallatin Tournament, but the Wolverines have shown no letup despite their coach who built up the franchise, Chris McMillan, moving to King City. They tried their luck against Trenton, but the Bulldogs, after having been down the last few years, are on the rise again with some impressive size, and they were wiped out again. There was no rest for the weary as the Shamrocks had to play against perennial powerhouse Winston and Levi Youtsey and fell 54-36. And now, they have to turn right around and play St. Joseph Christian.

After being in over their heads the first few minutes, the Shamrocks managed to find their footing and even force some turnovers of their own; both teams turned it over 15 times. Levi Youtsey had a monster night with 19 points, 18 boards, and 6 blocks, but the rebounding was nearly even, with the Redbirds only having a 35-31 advantage. The big difference in the game was North Harrison leaving too many points on the floor. They missed nine shots that were within 5 feet of the rim, got seven others blocked by Youtsey and the rest of the Redbirds, and missed eight free throws, more than enough to account for the entire deficit.

It was 17-4 before the Shamrocks started finding their footing, with Evan Schreiber getting a pullup and Wyatt Maize hitting a free throw to make it 17-7. But then the Shamrocks went through a stretch from the start of the second quarter to the 3:34 mark of the third quarter where Jensen Davis was the only player who scored for them. Meanwhile, Brayden Watkins hit a 3-pointer to put the Redbirds up 25-10 at the 5:25 mark of the second. Watkins, a high-energy player who is automatic from long distance and takes a lot of pressure off Youtsey down low, picked up his fourth foul, but it didn't matter as the Redbirds scored the last seven points of the half after Davis had cut it to 25-12 as Winston led 32-12.

Watkins returned to start the third and went bezerk, scoring 10 of his team's first 12 points in the period to make it 44-14 before he finally fouled out. Without Watkins on the floor, North Harrison outplayed Winston the rest of the way, getting the deficit down to 18 points by the end of the game.

The Shamrocks started fighting back after Wyatt Maize's 3-pointer with 3:34 left in the third snapped them out of their funk. Evan Schrieber hit another after a skip pass and Andrew Craig hit a putback before Youtsey and Waylon Estep put the Redbirds in running clock territory after three at 54-23.

But North Harrison killed the running clock and held the Redbirds scoreless in the fourth even when Youtsey was on the floor. Gage Fortner got untracked from the three point line after missing a ton all night, Jensen Davis got a steal, and Wyatt Maize hit a reverse layup over Youtsey. Late in the game, North Harrison pulled off the same trick Worth County did against North Nodaway, making it look like they were going to the wrong basket, fooling everybody and getting Ryker Fortner a wide open layup. Ryker converted a steal into a free throw and Tate Richardson hit a 3-pointer at the end to get the margin under 20.

The Shamrocks got eight players into the scoring column, but are still looking for someone who is a go-to guy even against tough teams. Jensen Davis had 9, Wyatt Maize 7, Gage Forner and Evan Schrieber 5 each, Ryker Fortner and Tate Richardson 3, and Dustin Hamilton and Andrew Craig 2.

Wyatt Maize had 2 blocks.

Andrew Craig had 9 boards. Owan Roberson had 6, Wyatt Maize 5, Dustin Hamilton 4, Evan Schrieber and Gage Fortner 2, and Landon Johnson, Ryker Fortner, and Kyler Kimbrough 1.

Wyatt Maize had 4 assists. Evan Schreiber had 3, Jensen Davis 2, and Dustin Hamilton and Ryker Fortner 1.

Wyatt Maize had 4 tips. Owan Roberson and Jensen Davis had 3, Evan Schreiber and Andrew Craig 2, and Dustin Hamilton had 1.

Wyatt Maize, Evan Schreiber, and Jensen Davis had 2 steals. Owan Roberson, Gage Fortner, Andrew Craig, Landon Johnson, Ryker Fortner, Kellan Craig, and Tate Richardson had 1.
