Karson Briner Scores 19 as Tiger Boys Even Record

Worth County's boys evened their record Tuesday, December 10th as they easily handled Northeast Nodaway 69-28. The Tigers got off to a bad start, dropping their first two games, but turned things around in their next two by winning the giveaway/takeaway battle. They forced 32 turnovers and surrendered it 15 times, giving themselves 17 extra possessions.

Karson Briner finally started to round into the force in the post that coach Les New thought he could be, while he had a lot of help behind him. Nine different Tigers found their way into the scoring column. Coach New thought the post game would be a strength this year, and it finally showed up as the Tigers also dominated on the boards 45-18.

For Northeast, they are in rebuilding mode, trying to give an incoming freshman class something to work with next year. They led Union Star in the PVI most of the way before the Trojans, with their newfound numbers and depth, came back and won. They got two into double figures with Jake Redden getting 13 and learning a 3-point shot along the way; Lance Runde, who grew several inches from last year, added 12. The goal moving forward will be to find three other players to get into the scoring column and get at least one win before the season is out.

Cannon Fletcher opened the scoring for the Tigers with a shot from the right side. Lucas Frisch added a free throw and then Karson Briner got a tip and Cole Ruby a steal and finish to make it 6-0 and prompt the first Bluejay timeout. The teams traded triples with Cole Ruby getting his second three and Jake Redden answering for the Bluejays, but the rest was all Tigers as Hayden Sanders hit back to back jacks and Andrew Griffin, playing his best game as a Tiger, scored four straight to make it 19-3 after one.

Hayden Sanders started the scoring for the Tigers in the second with a triple. Lance Runde threw up a prayer that went in, but the Tigers pulled away to a 45-7 halftime lead as Andrew Griffin led the way with five in the period and Franklynn Taute and Cole Ruby hit triples.

The third quarter belonged to Karson Briner, who turned into a scoring machine and played his best quarter as a Tiger. He scored 17 points in the period, posting up at will and finishing. Cole Ruby, Hayden Sanders, Dylan Smith, Franklynn Taute, and Ethan Lininger all got him the ball in that period. Cole Ruby added 8 in the period, Franklynn Taute hit his second three to get to a career high of six, and Karson knocked one down from the high post after a sixth chance possession in which he got five offensive boards in that frame. He capped it off by getting a steal, throwing to Hayden Sanders, who threw it back to Briner, who sprawled on the floor like Will Gladstone did so many times in the early 1990's, finished the three point play, and ended his night with 19 points.

Northeast kept playing hard and finally got untracked in the fourth quarter as Jake Redden got his third triple and Lance Runde, Reece Gray, and Keegan Hansen all chipped in for the Bluejays.
