Worth County’s junior high boys finished out an undefeated season Thursday with their 60-13 win over North Harrison. They were rarely seriously challenged, and when they were, they were able to play through it. Their biggest scare came in the semifinal round of the NEN Tournament, where their brothers of the gridiron gave them everything they wanted before Worth County finally came away with the win. They also faced two stiff challenges from Platte Valley; they were ice cold against them in the opening round of the tournament before Brock Healy went off and they pulled away for a 47-35 win, the second of back to back games against them. St. Gregory’s was supposed to provide a stiff challenge against them, but surprising Avenue City, which finished with a 9-4 record, made it to the finals instead and Worth County broke open a tight game early to win handily.
In the home stretch, Worth County got wins at Albany and South Harrison before entering the North Harrison Tournament. Albany played them tough for one quarter, but then Worth County pulled away for the remainder of the game, getting a 50-11 win. Brock Healy had 14, Hudson Cameron 12, Jordan Dannar 8, Cole Hardy 7, Owyn Wuillay 3, and Miles Saville, Weston Hill, and Gunnar Smith 2.
Against Princeton, Worth County pulled away to a 20-5 first quarter lead and never looked back. Brock Healy had 17 and Hudson Cameron continued to have the hot hand, adding 14. Cole Hardy had 9, Jordan Dannar and Owyn Wuillay had 4, and Jarrett Gilland and Silas Brown had 2.
Worth County had one more game to go in order to clinch the whole ball of wax. North Harrison ran the floor much better than the first time and played hard until the end. They got six players in the scoring column. But Worth County made quick work of them as Hudson Cameron continued to have the hot hand behind Brock Healy, scoring eight in the first quarter as the Tigers raced to a 26-3 lead. Then, Brock Healy showcased the form that led the Tigers back from 12 points down against the Shamrocks last year in the last few minutes, erupting for 11 points in the second as the lead grew to 45-9.
The effort was there for the Shamrocks, who managed to get 13 pass deflections and tieups against Worth County, and they only lost the rebounding battle 24-20. But Worth County won the giveaway/takeaway battle, forcing 36 turnovers while surrendering the ball only 9 times in the 60-13 win.
