Hadley DeFreece’s 3-Pointer Lifts NEN Junior High Girls Past Tigers

Worth County and NEN were locked in a tight battle during the girls side of the junior high games Thursday until Hadley DeFreece’s 3-pointer, with 20 seconds left in the third quarter, gave the Bluejays the cushion they needed to get separation from Worth County. The Bluejays went to to get a 24-17 win over Worth County.

The Tigers came into the game winless, but things started off well for them as Baylie Busby picked up her third foul in the first quarter and the fouls were 6-2 in Worth County’s favor at one point. The Tigers used balanced scoring from Kynah Steele and Autumn Cousatte to build a 6-4 lead after one quarter. Busby countered with four points for the Bluejays.

But then Steele also picked up her third foul late in the first. Both players played in the second with three quarters and finished the whole quarter without picking up their fourth. The Bluejays seemingly took control in the second when everyone else started chipping in. Jill Boswell had 4, Dalanie Auffert 3, and Lindsey Jackson 2 as the Bluejays built up a 13-7 lead at the break. Steele’s free throw with 1:27 left was the only tally for the Tigers.

But the third quarter started off well for Worth County as Steele got a lob from Kara-Jean Staton, scored off a steal, and then got another steal and threw it to Autumn Cousatte to knot it up at 13. Kynah Steele picked up her fourth foul, but stayed in, while Busby picked up her fourth and came out for the remainder of the third period.

The two teams split free throws to keep it tied at 14, then Sasha Deardorff hit from the left wing while Steele countered with a free throw to cut the deficit to 16-15. But with time winding down in the third, Hadley DeFreece, mistakenly thinking time was about to run out in the period, threw up a 3-pointer after getting a pass from Jill Boswell. The shot was nothing but net, and the play was enough to swing the game in Northeast’s favor as they went up 19-15 after three.

Kynah Steele hit a free throw to open the scoring for Worth County, but Dalanie Auffert hit one of her own and then Baylie Busby went backdoor with 3:15 left to make it 22-16. Lindsey Jackson picked up her fifth foul trying to guard Cousatte, and she hit a free throw with 2:31 left, but Steele picked up her fifth foul battling with Auffert for the board after the second try. Busby followed Steele to the bench with her fifth shortly afterwards, but Jill Boswell hit two free throws to ice it for the Bluejays.
