One of the deadliest accidents in recent memory for the area occurred Friday near Mount Ayr. The Iowa State Highway Patrol reports that a 1993 Peterbilt Truck driven by Ted Zacharias (28) of Atlantic (IA) was westbound on Highway 2 and a 2016 Mitsubishi Outlander driven by Renae Baker (49) of Redding was northbound on Highway P-27 at around 10:43 am. The Mitsubishi failed to stop at the stop sign. The Peterbilt struck the Mitsubishi on the passenger side. Both vehicles ended up in the northwest corner of the ditch, with the Peterbilt on its side.
Killed in the accident were Elizabeth Taylor Lakey (4) of Grant City, Briane Baker (12) of Redding, Hayden King (2) of Redding, Renae Baker (49) of Redding, and Sydney King (30) of Redding. Willy Baker (9) was injured and was lifeflighted. All were wearing seat belts at the time of the accident. A one year old was treated and released. Zacharias was not injured.
