Hopkins CBC Raises Over $4,700 for Ballpark and Trail

The Hopkins CBC has raised over $4,700 for the ballpark upgrades and the walking trail, the CBC learned last Wednesday night. They are still seeking donations; send donations to Barb Miller, PO Box 42, Hopkins, MO 64461. All donations are tax deductible.

The estimated price tag for the entire project came to an estimated $40,000, including $33,000 for the fence and $7,500 for the trail with aggregate based on bids received. Tony O’Riley said that this is not a final figure, but that it could be scaled back.

The school has expressed interest in helping. The trail would allow track athletes to practice on the walking trail instead of having to use the streets, which is a safety hazard. The fence would make it a regulation ballpark, which would allow North Nodaway to host district baseball tournaments in the future. This year’s tournament was held at West Nodaway; last year’s was at Beale Park in Maryville. It would also allow balls hit over the fence to count as home runs; Braymer hit three balls into the weeds in a game which counted as ground rule doubles.

Included in the total raised was a $1,500 donation from the Dugdale Foundation as well as the money raised from the recent fundraiser at the Community Building. There were many positive comments about the students who volunteered their time helping with serving people.

Installation of electricity at the park is complete.

The Hopkins CBC will be selling raffle tickets at the Hopkins Picnic. They will also sell root beer floats and assorted other flavors and toppings.

The CBC is in the process of getting more grants and donations raised to cover the cost of the upgrades to the ballpark and putting in the new trail.
