Sheridan United Methodist Church History

The first Methodist Church was located across the river in Defiance. It was built in 1879, and the first minister was Rev. Powers. In 1888, a new church was built where it stands today at Third and Noble Street.

In 1897, the first church bell was rang in Sheridan. The same year, an addition was built to the north side of the church. The Ladies Aid Society was organized in 1887. They contributed many items in the church, starting with the pulpit chairs on July 3rd, 1903. They are still in use today. In 1940, a basement was added, and by 1950, the church was remodeled with a Gothic style ceiling in the sanctuary. In 1970, a cloakroom and a bathroom were added. Through the years, many improvements were made. Most recently, in 2010, upholstery was added to the pews and new carpeting was added.

Sometime in the 1980’s, the ministry was joined, where one pastor served Denver, Grant City, and Sheridan. The parsonage was sold. The Pony Express District made changes to the ministry in 2009. One minister and two laity ministers served six churches in Denver, Grant City, Sheridan, Hopkins, Pickering, and Ravenwood.

Past ministers were W.H. LaVake (1898), G.F. Bieber (1896-1900), M.H. Wells (1903), O.C. Carden (1907-1912), Smith (1912), Alvah Huff (1921), Edgar O. Wells (1923), F.J. Smith (1924), C.V. Bittiker (1950), R.D. Ezzell (1957), R.F. Baummer (1961), Kenneth Norton (1962), Cleo Caimille (1963), Cleo Colville (1967), Jerry Daily (1971), Frankie Young (1974-1979), Bill Wasson (1980), Joyce Holley (1985), Brenda Abplanalp (1993), Michael Irving (199691998(, Darren Potter (1998-2003), Mike Agnew (2006-2009), Vallory Williams (2009), Susan Noakes (2010) and lay leaders Travis Dimmitt and Tim Wall, Janis Tobias (2012). Travis took a position at Wesley in July 2015. On January 1st, 2016, Martin Farnan, Certified Lay Minister, became sole leader as the Parish 5 split up.

For many years, worship hours were 8:30, but due to a commitment, Martin requested to change to 10:30. The church also has a Praise and Prayer and a Bible Study on Wednesday nights; the hours changed from 3:30 in the past to 5:30 now.

In April 2016, the first Praise Band was formed with new members, and May 2016 saw the beginning of Music Fest and Pot Luck on fifth Sundays. In July 2016, Farnan was also assigned to Hopkins.

A new time change switched the worship time to 9:30 am on Sundays; Farnan dropped from the Hopkins circuit while he remains the current Lay Pastor for Sheridan. Wednesday Praise and Prayer changed locations to a couple’s home in Hopkins where the band was centrally located. The death of their Bass player hit hard. COVID-19 canceled Worship and Wednesday night gatherings altogether in March 2020. Martin continued with more training and is the longest running Lay Leader to date at the church.

Doin' God's Work -- All Parish Worship

All Parish congregated at Sheridan UMC. It was good to see so many familiar faces with hearts joined together to worship! The Lord was smiling with so many there for this special celebration. When everyone works together to bring God glory, one had to feel the blessings! A special thanks to all of God's helpers. Jackie Wardrobe and Kathy Brand gave us a good lesson on judging people. Mary Chapman's Worship for Children and singing with Jim Spiers and Judy Trullinger was a special treat too!

Several attended the feast at the community hall afterwards. A good potluck and special thanks to all the kitchen helpers! It felt like Thanksgiving dinner to me! I was thankful the weather mist wasn't too cold to become ice. I pray that everyone learned from the lesson and enjoyed the chance to meet with others.

November, Turkey Week! There seemed to be a lot of opportunities Sunday! A month of gratitude could be changed to a year full of His blessings. Praise God for an awesome worship and communion together!

Due to Thanksgiving preparations, there will be no Wednesday 3:30 gathering this week for Sheridan Praise and Prayer. We will be doing it, but not together.

We will begin the Season of Advent by Hanging of the Greens next Sunday. Back to the regular church schedules until the next "5th Sunday."

December is just around the corner! If we thought the week was busy, buckle up; God has many more opportunities for us to serve Him. We may never know what task the Lord needs us to perform to be effective. Church does not happen only on Sundays; it is a daily process to become ALL He created us to be.

Originally in 1621, with about the same attendance as Sunday, they met, prepared a feast, and prayed for three days as they shared the opportunities God was leading them, that would change the world. I'm sure they had no idea that would continue hundreds of years later. See you in church.

Doin' God's Work -- One Week from Thanksgiving

Just a week away from Thanksgiving. I can smell the pumpkin pies already! Several have already been preparing feasts as we celebrate the month of gratitude. We really do have so much to thank God for!

The 1st snowfall of this season caught some off guard. I knew it was coming, and yet -- forgot to get snow gear together. Allow extra time to put on more garmets and clear off vehicles. Drive safely.

Next Sunday, November 23rd, will be the All Parish Worship. Sheridan will be hosting it. The new community building will be open to drop off food before coming to church. Worship services will be at 10:30. After worship, we will meet at the Community Building to join in a feast of gratitude. Hopkins and Pickering Council of Churches will be hosting Union services 7 pm November 23rd at Pickering UMC.

At 6:30, November 23rd, Assembly of God will be hosting a Thanksgiving Service in Worth County.

There you have three great opportunities to be spiritually and physically fed. No wonder I smell pumpkin pie; the community is bonding together to give thanks for the many blessings God has given to us. We praise Him for a bountiful harvest!

November 30th will be Hanging of the Greens in Nodaway-Worth Parish to begin the Advent Season. We will learn some of the different traditions and meanings.

Ending November singing songs of praise and gratitude. We will enter a busy Advent season. "Joyful Noise" will have a concert and soup supper December 14th at 3:30.

What makes serving God joyful? When all his servants work together to bring Him all the glory. I am thankful for those who encourage and enable me to serve God and my community. Jesus did not come to be served, but to serve God's people. We are to follow His teachings. Who can you serve today? Give thanks to those who serve you. See you in Sheridan UMC next Sunday, 10:30!

Doin' God's Work -- Bountiful Harvest

The Lord surely has blessed the corn crops. Everywhere there seems to be a pile waiting to go out in shipment to feed the nation. Praise God! I know many were concerned due to the weather at the time of planting. May our faith continue to grow through the miracles God does.

November is the one month we tend to show the most gratitude. Family traditions of a feast is one way many show their thankfulness.

I've heard some mention they were thankful election commercials ended. My job is to be thankful they had the courage to campaign and pray they can make a difference for God's glory. I believe in the power of prayer and it can change the direction our leaders take to transform us as one nation under God.

We gather at church at 3:30 Wednesday afternoons to pray and sing some praises; it makes a difference in our lives as well as those around us. Due to cold weather last winter, we had to take a break. I pray we will be blessed and able to serve him in every season, joyfully.

At Conference, each church was partnered with another congregation with the purpose of prayer and to encourage them. Grant City was partnered with Burlington Junction, Hopkins with Clearmont, Ravenwood with Burr Oak, Pickering with Skidmore and Wilcox, and Sheridan with Parnell. May teaming with them help us learn how to pray for their ministries.

Travis was at the pulpit this Sunday. Next week in the gratitude series, we will study about our community and public servants. Let us be thankful for their services. I am very thankful the water department was able to repair a broken main to restore what we come to take for granted. How many people do we take for granted on a daily basis? Take time to let them know they are appreciated for their sacrifices they make to serve God, country, and community. May God bless those who serve, to stay safe and healthy.

I wouldn't know where to begin counting my blessings. Join us at church and we can count them together. See you in church!

Doin' God's Work -- Gratitude

I hope everyone found good use of the extra hour when we lost Daylight Savings Time. We may change all the clocks in the house but our mental clock.

As we begin a new series of gratitude and giving, we are reminded of so many who have helped, encouraged, and trusted to be good stewards of God. Some are blessed to have strong Christian family values to pass His light to. With the season of Thanksgiving, if you have someone who made a special impact on your life, remember; time is short, be sure to let them know. We are "just a vapor," so don't hesitate; it can make a difference in their lives too. I have been blessed by so many!

I attended Dorrilla Hawk's birthday party. There were many who wished her a happy, healthy long life. I am sure she has been a blessing to many! May God continue to bless her to enjoy the fruits of her labor.

A busy week, thanking God and those who ventured out to support church events. The ladies worked hard to have a good Lord's Acre Day and Election Dinner. Thanks for all who attended and may their vote make a difference for the betterment of all mankind.

Making a difference has been the purpose for "Ben's Stockings of Hope." If you'd like to help them, they will be meeting 12-4 November 9th at Hopkins.

Grant City SWAG youth activity will be November 9th at 4. One never knows who you may encourage with the youth. Other opportunities with "Joyful Noise" and "Hopkins Sparks" can change a child's life. Keep them in prayer.

Next Sunday, we will be honoring our veterans, military, and leaders still serving our nation. Freedom is not free. If you encounter a veteran, give them thanks. November 11th is one day set aside to honor and remember their sacrifices. As with my feelings for Thanksgiving, it should not just be a one day a year event. We need to thank God every day for the blessings He has given us. Some are not happy with the way things are in the USA, but I believe they are better than a lot of other countries. I'm thankful to be here.

November 23rd, 10:30, All Parish Worship at Sheridan UMC. We will gather together for worship, then travel to the New Community Building for the pot luck feast and give thanks. Mark your calendars!

Doin' God's Work -- Heart of Worship

We've been doing a series exploring "The Heart of Worship." This week, it was "Worshipping Together." Next Sunday, "Evangelism: The Result of God-Centered Worship." Faithfully, we congregate to worship because we are faithful to God. When we are in groups, He builds our faith and binds our relationship with God closer.

Wednesday at 3:30, we meet to strengthen and lift each other up. God is faithful to fill OUR spirits up so we can continue to do God's work. We may not be strong in number, but faithful to the One who makes us strong in our weakness. We pray for large numbers to enter the Kingdom.

We gather as children of God for many reasons. But our main focus is on the Lord, to please him. I think of the times a few of us have met to do a project to bring God glory. Always amazed how much easier and joyful it is when we work together. Many have been doing the same with VBS. Hopkins will hold it at HFC Church July 27th to 31st in the evenings.

Ravenwood will host Breakfast and Lunch during the Ravenwood Fall Festival August 1st to 2nd. August 24th, they will host All Parish Fellowship with music and dessert 5:30 pm. Morning worship will be in home churches.

Local schools will begin August 15th. The church is accepting donations, monetary, or school supplies for the Back to School Fair until July 28th. The children need all the assistance they can get to start off with good esteem. August 8th is when Community Services plans the Back to School Fair.

July 30th at 6:30, Grant City UMC Ministries/Board meeting. Picking Bible Camp planning at the Thompsons 7 pm August 5th.

There are a lot of ways to get involved serving God. May the Lord bless upon us a double portion of His spirit within us as we grow in numbers for the Kingdom. Let's work together!

Doin' God's Work -- Old Defiance Bake Sale

We want to thank our supporters for a successful Old Defiance UMC Bake Sale. God did His part to try to keep us dry. The new community overhang was good protection. It was good to see a lot of familiar faces in the crowd.

All Parish at Lake Mozingo on Sunday, God also provided decent weather to worship in the open world. I'm sure the birds wanted to join us in "I'll Fly Away" as our voices chimed across the lake. For those who were unable to attend, sorry, they missed a great worship, fellowship, and a lot of good food! Music specials were also a blessing. I thank God for bringing us all together. "And we know that God causes all things to work together for those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." I hope we can put our gifts and talents together often.

Habitat for Humanity is building a home in Ravenwood. Throughout the summer, they need 15 skilled and unskilled workers on Saturdays. Soon, they will be putting the siding on!

July 6th, WCCC Communion service at 3 pm. Ravenwood Board meeting 7 pm July 7th. Pickering UMC 6:30 July 9th. July 13th, Hopkins Community Worship Service at 10:30.

As we work together to bring God's peace and joy to others, please have a safe 4th of July.

Doin' God's Work -- All Parish Worship

Spring came and sailed past us. Welcome summer; I may add thank God for A/C. The crops seems to enjoy the recent rains. Unfortunately, Nebraska and South Dakota were hit with tornadoes this past week too. UMCOR was there to assist them with emergency supplies. If you would like to make a donation, contact one of the church or lay leaders.

All Parish Worship will be next Sunday at 10:30 at Mozingo Lake at the Lions Shelter. In case of inclement weather, we will move it to Ravenwood UMC. There will be a PPR meeting following the carry-in dinner. Bring your service settings too.

Travis was at Worth County UMC with a history lesson on unity. We are all descendants of God. HIS desire is for us to live in unity, working together to share the message of His love and eternal life.

Habitat for Humanity is building a home in Ravenwood. They need 15 volunteers, both skilled and unskilled, each Saturday throughout the summer from 8-1 pm. Why not unite with some friends and make it a "Praying Hands and Dirty Fingernails" lesson from last year put into action? Call Stacey at (660) 254-4410 to schedule your date.

Sheridan began "Pray and Praise" a few weeks ago at 3:30. Join us as we spend time in fellowship and encourage each other so we may draw closer to God.

As summer begins, we find new, old ways to serve God. Old Defiance UMC Bake Sale June 28th at 8 am. The ladies will be busy this week as we prepare goodies to sell. Life may be like a box of chocolate and you may not know what goodies you will find, so be sure to stop by and check it out.

July series starts on the 6th with "Loving God Back." That reminds me of "Paying it Forward." Jesus paid the ultimate price for our sins. It is so easy for me to praise God for the promises He made and I want to love Him back. Praising and serving God is the best way I know how to "Pay it Forward." I hear the retirement plan is out of this world!

Doin' God's Work -- Father's Day in Worship

Many celebrated Father's Day in worship. One day a year, we honor our earthly dad, while we are called to honor our Heavenly Father in all we do 24/7. 80% of what a child learns in their first 12 years is through the eyes of what they see their parents do. Dads have the powerful example they tend to follow. May we learn from a godly dad that we can live fruitful lives that glorify God 24/7. For those whose dad is absent, help us as a community to set examples for children to see God in our actions. School is out for the summer, and children can especially use some extra guidance to help working parents.

Cowboy Church will be at Burlington Junction at the park or Methodist Church if it is raining on June 22nd at 10 am.

We will be continuing the series next Sunday with "One Holy Catholic* Church." Pastor Janis was at the pulpit Sunday here. Conference was refreshing for her. It was good to see her back "refueled" and excited for where God will be leading us.

All Parish Worship will be June 29th at 10:30 at Lake Mozingo. We are praying God will provide a beautiful day to congregate under His skies this year!

Sheridan will congregate for Praise & Prayer at 3:30 again this Wednesday. All are welcome to join us for a midweek "refuel" outreach to encourage and strengthen us.

June 25th, Grant City Ministries and Board Meeting at 6:30.

Old Defiance Bake Sale, June 28th, begins at 8 am. I imagine unless weather changes, we will be at the usual spot in the Park across from the Bank. Check out the goodies we will create with God's helping hand.

There are many ways we can be a fruitful community and do God's work. Ravenwood is getting a new home built by Habitat volunteers. Sheridan's new community building has really taken shape this past week! Let's roll up our sleeves and join hands in helping others. By doing so, we can also "pay it forward." We may not see the blessings that follow, but perhaps in the eyes of a small child, they will see that doing God's work can be fulfilling.

Doin' God's Work -- St. Patrick's Day

Wednesday at 6, we congregated and had good fellowship, encouragement to make it through a busy week. We need that, some weeks more than others. The prayer list grows; we know God hears each of their names lifted up. It's an honor to lift them up to the Lord. Occasionally, we get a request in the mail. It's good to know others trust us to pray for them. We topped the evening off with a song that I've found myself humming since. There are so many songs that touch our hearts as we approach Easter. Join us!

As I watched the St. Patrick Day parade roll by, I wondered how many knew much about the man, a saint, who we honor. He was enslaved for six years and escaped to go out into the world sharing God's word and what God had done for him. Most people want a four leaf clover; St. Patrick used a three leaf clover to demonstrate the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit while he baptized thousands. I will never look at a three-leaf clover the same again! Does this inspire you to look at St. Patrick's Day differently?

Next week, Holy Week begins. There will be a lot of special activities to commemorate the life of Jesus and the opportunity to follow Him, to strengthen our faith.

Maundy Thursday, March 28, 2013 services at 5 p.m. Hopkins and 7 p.m. Ravenwood UMC. Maundy comes from the Latin word mandatum, meaning commandment. From John 13:34 -- "A new commandment I get you: Love one another; as I have loved you, so you must love one another."

As we prepare our hearts for a busy Holy Week in Grant City UMC at 7 a.m., may we find serving God a joy to share with others daily. See you in church!

Doin' God's Work -- Prayers for Bone Marrow Transplants

Wednesday at 6, we met to sing praises and pray for many. Our hearts and prayers go out at this time for those preparing for bone marrow transplants coming up. May God do wondrous things through the medical staff. Our trials must be a part of God's plan to help us grow in his likeness; to make us stronger. Reading His word and praying are tools God gave us to get in tune with what God desires to complete His plans and complete us.

Ash Wednesday services were at Ravenwood but we still got a taste of what we missed. Pastor Janis did a portion of it for us Sunday. Lenten Candles ceremony, great sermon, and the smiles of His childrens' faces made it a special service. Join us at Sheridan 8:30 Sunday morning.

It's difficult to believe that February is over half gone, even more difficult to believe daylight savings time will soon be upon us. I asked myself, "Was I more productive in the 'extra hour, doubt it!" Time is a gift which we need to use wisely. How well do we use our time for service to the Lord? Some of us feel there is just not enough time in one day; for others, they feel time drags on. May we seek God to fill in those gaps. He can guide us to do things that will change the world we live in to be a better place. If not for us, perhaps for others around us. So, mark time by doing God's work. You will be blessed for it!

Wednesday, February 20th is a busy day of events. "Make a Joyful Noise" after-school program from 3:30 to 5 pm and UMW at 6:30. Ravenwood Board Meeting will be February 24th at 12:15 and Hopkins at 5; Grant City will have their ministry meeting at 6 and board meeting on February 27th at 7. After a deep breath, we shall enter in Holy Week activities in March. May God use us, our time, and our activities to create pleasing consequences for God's kingdom.

Lenten season is a time for reflection, change, and allowing the power of the Holy Spirit to grow within us.

Doin' God's Work -- Senseless Massacre

Another senseless massacre, this time in Newton, CT. My heart is heavy for those who will not hear their little ones this Christmas; may our prayers comfort them. Tomorrow is not promised to us, so hug your children and let them know you love them. The best gift you can give them isn't under a Christmas tree; it was born in a manger over 2,000 years ago. Tell them the story of Jesus so that they may know God's love. Our salvation, we don't have a deadline to meet or do we? The satisfaction it gives us to KNOW before the final trumpet sounds that God will take our loved ones to heaven is priceless.

Patiently, I waited for a new pair of boots, which in God's time finally arrived, but as with any new shoes, they can be more painful molding them to me. One tolerates the blisters because the old pair is worn out. We do it expecting the new ones will be as comfortable as the old pair. Our attitudes can also feel that way, comfortable. Sometimes, we have to make changes in how we are serving God. Creating better habits, we shall press on daily. As Jesus continues to mold us and make us new, we too can find His arms a comfortable place to be. The blisters and pain of past disappears, thanks be to God. As I walk with Christ every day, my new life fits better and better.

Wednesday at 6, we met at the church; voices were strong in singing Christmas songs of old. Prayer updates and concerns; it never ceases to amaze me how God can turn any situation around for the use of His kingdom. Due to Christmas activities, we will not be meeting on the 26th. Lord willing, we shall meet again on January 2nd before we congregate for the 5th Sunday, January 6th, at the Hopkins United Methodist Church all-parish worship and carry-in dinner. A new year's way to begin worship, all under one roof.

This is the time of year to start new habits and with God's help, we can find loving our neighbors easier to do. Spread God's gifts that Jesus came to share with us.

Doin' God's Work -- Winds of Change

The winds of change crept back into the area. We've been so blessed with a mild fall. May we adapt to changes ahead, with God's help. With the hustle and bustle of how many shopping days lay ahead before Christmas, it seems like a busy time. There are always those last-minute shoppers. I pray we won't be described that way when it comes to the preparation of expecting our King to return.

The second Advent Candle was lit Sunday in a special service. The excitement builds up to the arrival of the long-awaited King that Micah had prophesied about in Jerusalem in the days of King Herod. May our hearts be as excited as the astrologers were while following that same bright star to Bethlehem. It was no rumor, nor is the second coming of our Lord.

Wednesday, 6 p.m. at Sheridan UMC, we gathered to sing Christmas carols, fellowship, and pray. The more voices joined together, the easier on God's ears. I am sure HE heard us loud and clear Wednesday. The church decorations can brighten a lonely spirit. Join us and your heart may feel lighter afterward. It's always good just to be in the house of the Lord!

"Toys for Tots" Christmas adoption for Worth County. For those who adopted, remember to have their gifts in at Community Services before December 19th. If you've not adopted a child yet, see Community Services Director Mary Jo Fletchall.

"Make a Joyful Noise" performed Sunday afternoon at 3:30. Jim Spiers and other volunteers have been helping to make it a special time for the after-school program. Perhaps a little nervous; hopefully, the sermon "Giving Up on Perfect" eased them. We tend to put high expectations on ourselves when we need to rely on God to work through us for His glory.

There are so many ways one can do God's work. If God is calling it upon your heart to participate, contact one of the church leaders. Volunteering can fill empty voids and replace them with joy. So, how is God calling you to serve Him today? Let the Holy Spirit lead you. Listen to His calling. God bless you this week. See you in church!

Doin' God's Work -- Getting Back on Track

How many days does it take to get back on track after a mid-week holiday? I am so thankful for Sunday worship to follow shortly afterwards! Somehow, going to church keeps me on track; it must be the Holy Spirit directing my path to church. Who needs GPS when you have the Holy Spirit?

It is sad to me that Black Friday sets the pace in the future forecast of sales. I didn't go; my last experience didn't go well. I think it is also a test among Christians; do we act like Christians or stampeding bargain hunters? I hope no one spent more time on shopping strategies than giving God thanks for the blessings He's already given to us. God never gets enough praise for the blessings He freely gives us! He is king and still reigns, praise Him!

Wednesday, congregation was a little smaller since some were basting turkeys. Pastor Janis was in North Carolina on vacation. She will return the 27th.

December is coming too fast! Advent Season begins. Candle lighting services will be held each Sunday leading up to Christmas. As Christians, we have so much to look forward to. Over 2000 years ago, the astrologers were also looking for that special star. This week, we may also see some special events in the heavens. A lunar eclipse will happen on the 28th. On December 3rd, 3 planets will line up over Giza Pyramids. God is creating beautiful things for us to keep watch for His return.

On December 2nd, Grant City at noon, they will be Hanging of the Greens decorating; bring a dish to have a luncheon fellowship. Decorating seems to bring out those childhood memories. Hopefully, untangling the lights will not take the joy out of decorating.

Make a Joyful Noise will perform December 9th at the Grant City United Methodist Church. It is a wonderful time to come and support the youth ministry. What they learn will go with them all their lives. I'm sure they are working very hard to put on a good performance for God.

May we enter Advent Season with a desiring heart to serve, give thanks, and worship God more. Jesus is the reason for the season and my purpose for living. See you in church!

Doin' God's Work -- Beautiful Fall Bouquet

Seems as though God has made a beautiful fall bouquet with our loved ones from the area. Our condolences to the families. They read His word and shared their joy of His love to others. To hear, "Job well done" by our master should be our goal when we depart from this life. They reap their rewards with Jesus, where one day I hope to be.

There are many who may be feeling, "Where is God?" The news of Energizer closing the plant shook a lot of peoples' faith; may they stand the test and be ready to walk through the new doors God is about to lead them through. God is preparing something better for those who love Him. (1 Corinthians 2:9) Don't let the devil discourage you! We must keep our eyes on Him. The news couldn't come at a more difficult time with Thanksgiving near; or could it? We do have so much to thank God for! There are no guarantees in this world except for our salvation. I am thankful for that hope.

Wednesday at 6, join us in singing, fellowship, and prayer; the middle of the week faith booster!

Tim was at the pulpit Sunday in Worth County. "Are we giving God our all as Jesus did?" Thanks to our military who are making difficult sacrifices for us!

There will be special Thanksgiving services November 18th at 5. Tim will be in Grant City; Pastor Janis will be in Hopkins. Non-perishable items will be accepted at this service to donate to the Ministry Center for the food pantry. Just a small gift is doin' God's work by helping others.

May our prayers be heard to put His blanket of protection over us from harm and winter germs. We give thanks for where God has carried us this past year. Wishing you and your families many blessings during this Thanksgiving season. See you in church!

Doin' God's Work -- Praying for our Leaders

How many were so ready for this election to be over with? Will you be satisfied with any of them? We should pray every day, not just during elections, for our leaders to do God's will and less of their own, as the Bible instructs us to do. May the politicians do what they believe is just for God's kingdom. Most importantly, remember that God is in control over all. Read His word and be prepared for the days to come.

Wednesday at 6, we congregated to pray for the survivors of Sandy and the recovery for those in her path. God spared us from the direct hit of the hurricane. It is time for us to come together and show that Christ's children love our neighbors. UMCOR took up a special collection Sunday for aid.

Samaritan's Christmas Shoe Box is collecting November 12th to 18th. They need to be delivered to Calvary Church by the 18th from 1-4 p.m. The David Petersen family is also accepting them for delivery.

Sunday, Pastor Janis was in the Worth County churches. Communion was served; a time to renew our strength. A special candlelight service was held to remember those in our congregation and community we have lost this past year. May God comfort the loved ones who are still suffering the loss; strengthen them and fill them with the hope to continue to do God's work. May the circle not be broken and reunite us in heaven.

A special thanks to all who volunteered and attended the Sheridan Annual Election Bean Dinner. You helped make it a success! Sunday, we will have a special prayer for our military on Veteran's Day. If you see a Veteran, thank him for the sacrifice they gave to God and our country. May God keep them safe!

Will you build your faith on the solid rock God has prepared for us? The only sinking sand is now at the bottom of the Atlantic, so let's get busy doing God's work! Join us as we prepare for 2013 and the mission work God has planned. Praise God in song for the wondrous things He has done and will lead us into the future, for His glory! There's so many blessings to praise God for as we prepare our hearts for Thanksgiving services this month. See you in church!

Doin' God's Work -- Trick or Treat!

Trick or Treat! God has done a lot of treating while the devil is still up to his tricks. Keep our eyes on God and doing his work until He returns. I hope the children understand the difference is only a prayer away.

The calendar seems to turn much faster than it used to. Perhaps it is because I am ready to hibernate and reflect on where God carried me last month. I have so much to thank God for! Time to give back to our neighbors!

Wednesday, we congregated, sang songs of praise for blessings of God's work from answered prayers. We also discussed ways to spread the gospel cheer.

Samaritans Purse Shoe Box Christmas is being collected. November 12-19 dropoff is at the 24770 Interlude Road, Calvary Church in Maryville. Go east on 16th street, turn left on Dewey, go 1 block, turn into the drive on your right. Collection times are -- November 12th, 3-7 p.m.; Saturday (17th) and Sunday (18th), 1-4 p.m.; Monday (19th) 8-9:30 a.m. Praise God for the opportunity to give to others during the special season of His birth! Franklin Graham had a vision in 1993. Last year, they delivered over 8.6 million gift-filled shoeboxes to over 100 countries that spread the Gospel and God's love.

There will be many opportunities to enjoy a meal with UMC folks. November 2nd fall dinner at Ravenwood; Lord's Acre Sale November 3rd at Grant City; and don't forget the annual Election Dinner at Sheridan City Hall November 6th. Also, Sheridan will have a bazaar to purchase some baked goodies and a little bit of everything. Make plans to join us while you are in town voting.

I guarantee doing God's work will open more doors as we approach Thanksgiving and Advent. Let's put His word into action for others to desire following God. Pastor Janis plans to take a vacation November 19th to 26th. What a blessing the TRIO have been to our communities. May we continue to pray for them, God's vision for us, and the world around us in these political times. See you in the neighborhood and church!

Doin' God's Work -- Harvest Drawing Near

Another month zipping past us! Harvest is drawing near for some. What if Jesus declared "Harvest Day" in our lives and He asked us to gather up the yield of our everyday choices for this past year? What would you have to offer Him? May we reap what we sow, and have a bountiful crop to offer God. Give God the first yield every day; He wants the "cream of the crop." HE deserves so much more!

The Lord's house is taking a new look and soaking in a big coating of paint. It will look really nice when the job is completed!

Wednesday, 6 p.m., we congregate to praise and to give back a small portion of time He's given us this week; it also refuels us to continue on the Mission He calls us to do for His glory.

Sunday was Children's Sabbath; what better time to start teaching children to worship? Our future is in their hands, so let's get them started by knowing Christ loves them. There are many ways to reach out in the community to them.

A busy week with "Make a Joyful Noise Wednesday." The children are learning a lot about God's love in song and having a good time. The leaders are building up their faith and reaching out to them. May God bless them for doing God's work!

"Seeing gray in a black and white world" study for the next four years. Laura Wideman is leading this in Ravenwood UMC 2 p.m. Sunday.

Grant City board meetings 6 and 7 p.m. October 24th. October 31st, there will be no "Make a joyful noise" as it is time to prepare for the Lord's Acre Sale bean dinner/bazaar. It will be held November 3rd.

October 31st is the Ravenwood Neighborhood Outreach and their fall dinner will be November 2nd.

Sheridan UMC will hold their annual Election Day Bean Dinner and Bazaar at City Hall on November 6th.

There are many ways to serve God in our community. May God direct our paths as we give thanks for the many blessings He's given us. See you in church!

Doin' God's Work -- Children's Sabbath

Living for the Lord means an endless supply of blessings may come at the most unexpected time. Be ready to accept the blessings and give HIM praise for them!

I had the opportunity to spend times with my great-nieces and "out of the mouths of babes" left me feeling blessed as they grow in the Lord. October 21st will be Children's Sabbath. A good time to bring a child and introduce them to God's favor. It is far easier to lead them to God when they are young. The blessings that come from that are a benefit for everyone.

On my journey home, the wind blew the doors shut while at a gas station. Doors automatically locked with the keys in the ignition. We had no one at home to bring a spare key or a cell phone to call for help. So we prayed by the car. A young man overheard our prayer and he WAS the answer to our prayer. Recently, he himself was in the same dilemma and bought a lock-out kit. God sent him there not for gas but to be of assistance. We both left there feeling blessed; one for being a blessing and two for receiving a blessing. We didn't need a cell phone; just a little talk with Jesus made it right!

There are many opportunities to serve God by helping others. Be ready; you never know when you can let your light shine! October 21st at 2 p.m., Hopkins will be hosting Parkdale worship services.

October 24th, Grant City Ministries will be at 6 p.m.; board meeting will be at 7. October 31st, Ravenwood neighbor outreach. Grant City UMC will be busy preparing for the Lord's Acre Sale for November 3rd. Sheridan will host their annual Election Bean Dinner and Bazaar November 6th. Mark your calendar for these events. Doin' God's Work for October 10th, 2012

Wednesday at church, we sang a lot of favorite hymns to put the living spirit into us. Sometimes during the midweek, we just need a little boost and reminder of where God has brought us from. After witnessing a miracle last Sunday, the choir should have no doubts that God can and will do amazing things when bonded in prayer.

Changing the weather on us also seems to be something God has done to get our attention. I recall hearing some people say they would not complain after 110 degrees this summer. Oh, how quickly they forget! God has a plan for the seasons. Hopes and prayers for harvesting, time for crops, and always for souls that His disciples may produce a bountiful and fruitful harvest.

October 17th, 3:30 to 5, Grant City afterschool program at Grant City UMC, "Make a Joyful Noise" continues to encourage children to express their joy in song. We have so much to be thankful for and raise our voices in songs.

A lot of events coming up starting with Pickering United Methodist Women hosting a garage sale October 12th, 8 to 6 p.m. and Saturday October 13th, 8 to noon at the Movie Magic building in Maryville.

The Charge Conference will be October 16th in Maryville. Pastor Janis has been keeping busy with paperwork. God blessed her with a volunteer to help. Six churches have a lot of paperwork to keep track of.

Pastor Janis was at the pulpit with the series on "Getting it Right with our Neighbor." This week was about forgiveness. I have found it is often easier to forgive others than it is to forgive myself. Why is it so difficult to accept that God has cancelled our debts and has pardoned our transgressions? God's grace is infinite; Ephesians 1:7-8. Even when we fail, God doesn't hold our sins against us; Romans 8: 1-2. Jesus bore them all on the cross so we might know the joy and peace that freedom from sin and guilt will give us. When we let go of our shame, we find that peace. It is written in His word, so claim it!

Wherever God may lead you this week, remember His grace has gone before us; there is nothing to fear if we are living life for His glory. As we are doing God's work this week, keep a song of praise in your heart! See you in church!
