Winston proposed joining the Pattonsburg football cooperative and sent a presentation to Pattonsburg at the most recent Pattonsburg school board meeting, Northwest Mo Info reported. The Pattonsburg board tabled the idea until a future meeting. Currently, Pattonsburg is in a three-way football cooperative with North Harrison and Gilman City. MSHSAA rules limit the number of schools in a football cooperative to three.
If Winston were to join the Pattonsburg football cooperative and North Harrison were to leave, the Shamrocks could join the Worth County football cooperative; however, the combined enrollment of Worth County, North Harrison, and NEN is at 153 students according to the latest MSHSAA figures. That would force Worth County to compete in 11-man football, since the ceiling for eight-man schools under MSHSAA rules is 150 students.
It would not be clear what North Harrison's options would be in such a scenario. Princeton already has an existing football cooperative agreement with Cainsville and Newtown-Harris. If North Harrison were to attempt to form a football cooperative with its nearby neighbors, Ridgeway and Cainsville, it would likely involve playing the numbers game. Cainsville has 22 students and Ridgeway 17 under MSHSAA figures. North Harrison has 47.
One possible scenario could be to petition MSHSAA to allow four schools to form a football cooperative. But if MSHSAA were to allow such an arrangement, that would mean a combined enrollment of 141 students among Pattonsburg, Gilman City, North Harrison, and Winston combined. If their combined enrollment were to go up over 150 combined students, it would force Pattonsburg to play 11-man football.
