North Nodaway’s girls had been mired in a prolonged slump since December, but they came out of it in a big way Friday for their Courtwarming with a 44-40 win over Mound City. Previously, coach Sami Jackson had told the Maryville Forum that the team needed to match the other team’s physicality in games. They did that in a big way in Friday’s game, beating a team that had beaten East Atchison. She told the Express after the win that the only other adjustment she made was that she told them they needed to have fun again.
The first quarter was evenly played, but it was obvious that
the Mustangs had made another adjustment on their own; they were doing a much
better job of getting downhill on offense despite the big Panther front line of
Maggie Osborn and Miranda Rieger. Osborn put the Panthers up 8-5 early, but
then Lauren Herndon knotted it up again with an NBA 3-pointer. The game was
tied again at 10 before Lauren Herndon converted a steal to put the Mustangs up
12-10 after one. The Mustangs played a nearly perfect quarter, not giving up a
single offensive board and only turning it over twice.
But things changed in the second quarter as North Nodaway
turned it over five times in the first few minutes of the second quarter, the
talking disappeared on defense, and three different Panthers, Osborn, Kadee
Crider, and Ava Barnes connected to put the Panthers up 19-14. North Nodaway
cleaned it up and started closing the gap again as Angie Parker got a putback
and Lily Blane knocked down a shot from the top of the key before two Panther
free throws put them up 21-18 at the half.
Lauren Herndon and Saryn Brown put the Mustangs up 22-21,
but it looked like Mound City would take over as Crider knocked down a
3-pointer, North Nodaway didn’t get back on defense and Barnes was all alone
for two, and Osborn hit one of two from the line to make it 27-22. But then a
costly sequence swung the momentum back in favor of the Mustangs as Rieger
picked up her third and fourth fouls in quick succession and then Lauren
Herndon converted a fast break to make it 27-24. Osborn countered with a 3-point
play, but then Lauren Herndon scored off another drive, Lily Blane got a steal
and finished it over Osborn, and then Saryn Brown got behind the defense and
Lauren Herndon led her perfectly to convert a three point play to give the
Mustangs the lead again at 31-30. Normally a 3-point shooter, Crider posted up
inside and finished to put Mound City in front 32-31, but then Lauren Herndon
split three defenders and made one of two at the line to tie the game at 32
after three.
Saryn Brown and Lauren Herndon put North Nodaway up 38-34
early in the fourth, but then Mound City started trapping everything and
forcing turnovers and Maggie Osborn scored four straight to tie it right back
up at 38. Lauren Herndon went to the rim after a pass from Lacy Riley and put
the Mustangs in front 40-38. Miranda Rieger’s
shot that would have tied it missed and then she picked up her fifth
foul. Saryn Brown missed an inside shot, but then got her own rebound and made
one of two to make it 41-38.
Maggie Osborn brought the Panthers back to within one at
41-40, but then Lauren pushed it right back down the court and scored to make
it 43-40. Maggie Osborn missed from inside with 25 seconds and Addalea Barcus
secured the defensive board for the Mustangs. Mound City had to start fouling,
and they picked up their third, fourth, and fifth fouls as North Nodaway was
table to take 14 seconds off the clock down to 11 seconds.
Lauren Herndon made one of two to make it a two possession
game at 44-40, and then North Nodaway faceguarded both Osborn and Crider, Mound
City’s two best 3-point shooters. Mound City couldn’t get a shot off and lost
the ball out of bounds with 1.5 seconds left, letting North Nodaway run out the
clock.
For North Nodaway, Lauren Herndon had 23. Saryn Brown had
14, Lily Blane 4, Angie Parker 2, and Lacy Riley 1.
Lauren Herndon had 10 boards to complete a double double.
