Obituary -- Yvonne Galloway 1933-2023

Anna Yvonne (Austin) Galloway was born on February 23, 1933, to Glenn and Maggie (Scammahorn) Austin at her family’s home near Redding, Iowa. She was welcomed into the presence of her Savior on July 10, 2023. As the first of four children, she later welcomed brothers Marvin, Bill and Doyle. Since she was the only daughter, she learned at an early age how to cook, clean and care for her brothers while her mother helped with the farm work.

The Austin family grew up with a basketball in their hands. Yvonne’s dad spent many hours shooting baskets with his kids. Those hours led to starter positions for Yvonne on the Redding High School basketball teams. Eventually she won the Iowa girls state high school free throw championship.

Following high school, Yvonne completed the secretarial course at the American Institute of Business in Des Moines. She then married her high school sweetheart, Rex Galloway, in June 1952. Their family grew to include their four children and their families; daughter, Kathleen (Bob) Ross of Leawood, KS; daughter, Debbie (Mike) Gilliland of Mt Ayr, IA; son, Robert (Carol Anne) Galloway of Kellerton, IA; and son, Mark (Laurie) Galloway of Prior Lake, MN.

Yvonne’s first job was as a clerk at the ASCS office in Mt. Ayr. She also ran the office at the Green Hills fertilizer plant. After the children were grown, Rex and Yvonne moved to Villisca, where she continued to work at office jobs in the area. In their spare time, they enjoyed woodworking and created many pieces of wood art that they gave as gifts or sold. Yvonne also enjoyed caring for her iris and lily flower beds in Villisca, spending hours weeding and deadheading them. Yvonne returned to live in Mt. Ayr in 2013. Her last several years were spent at Maple Ridge Assisted Living and Mt. Ayr Health Care Center. Yvonne passed away July 10, 2023.

Yvonne had 10 grandchildren; Jacque, Joel and Jennifer (Kathy); Matthew, Maggie, and Mitchell (Debbie); Sarah and Laura (Bob); Meghan and Ben (Mark). Great grandchildren include Jessica, Alyssa, CJ, and Isabella (Jacque); Eloise and Johanna (Joel); Cage, Trip, Molly, Emory, and Mackenzie (Jennifer); Brittney, Bria, Blake and Bradley (Matthew); Elijah and Benjamin (Maggie); Jeremiah, Raylee, Brylee and Gracelynn (Mitchell); Will, Kate and Anne (Sarah); Ivan, Gabriella, Evelina, and Liliana (Laura); and Eloise (Meghan).

Yvonne was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband, and her brothers Marvin and Doyle. She is survived by her brother Bill.

Memorials are to Kisarets in Ukraine or Hillside Missionary Church in Clarinda.

A celebration of life is tentatively scheduled for the end of August at the Hillside Missionary Church in Clarinda, Iowa.
