High School Baseball to Allow Communication Devices

The use of a one way communication device between a coach and a team’s catcher for the purpose of calling pitches will be permitted in high school baseball starting next season, Northwest Mo Info reported Friday. Coaches cannot communicate with any other player besides the catcher on defense, and must be in the dugout while using such a device.

Umpires will no longer be allowed to consider spectator behavior when deciding to forfeit a contest. Behavior by spectators under the rules will be handled by game administration. Infractions by players, coaches, or team bench personnel will remain under the umpire’s jurisdiction.

Wristbands with defensive shifts, pitching choices, or game directions will be designated as non-electronic equipment, must be a single solid color, and must be worn on the forearm. Pitchers’ cards must not be white, gray, or a distracting color and must be worn on their non-pitching arm.
