Northeast Nodaway’s girls had every reason to brace themselves with five minutes left in their game with Union Star. They were up 49-33 against the Trojans, but Baylie Busby had fouled out, and Union Star has shown the capability over the last three years to light up the scoreboard in a hurry. But then Jill Boswell stepped up her game and helped the Bluejays hold off Union Star as they pulled away to a 59-38 win and clinched a winning season for the year.
Jill Boswell had four of her six boards in the fourth quarter against a team that lives off crashing the offensive glass and gets 20 offensive boards a game. With Union Star swarming and pressing to try and erase their deficit and Busby on the bench with five fouls, Boswell provided the steady ballhandling the Bluejays needed, repeatedly breaking the press and keeping the Bluejays out of trouble. On the defensive end, freshman sensation Kenzie Pettijohn was as good as advertised, pushing the ball up the floor every time she touched the ball, but the Bluejays were able to hold her down to seven points.
Dalanie Auffert carried the scoring load for Northeast during the final five minutes, scoring seven points. Mylee Wilmes provided the dagger when she got the ball away from Pettijohn, Sasha Deardorff got the steal and fed Dalanie Auffert. Wilmes followed it up with a 3-pointer to give Northeast its biggest lead of the night.
Northeast seemingly had the game under control when they took a 33-13 lead early in the third quarter. But when Busby picked up her third and fourth fouls and sat on the bench, Union Star rallied, putting on their press and cutting it to 38-25 last in the third before Jill Boswell went coast to coast at the buzzer and converted a three point play to make it 41-25.
Hadley DeFreece kept the Bluejays afloat in the fourth quarter with a couple of steals. She was active on defense with 10 tips and 3 steals.
For Northeast, Baylie Busby had 19 points. Dalanie Auffert had 17, Hadley DeFreece 10, Mylee Wilmes 6, Sasha Deardorff 4, and Jill Boswell.
Dalanie Auffert had 4 blocks and Hadley DeFreece 2.
Dalanie Auffert had 14 boards. Jill Boswell and Baylie Busby had 6, Sasha Deardorff 5, Mylee Wilmes and Hadley DeFreece 2, and Makenzie Pride 1. Northeast held Union Star to 10 offensive boards for the night, half of what they normally get.
