Northeast Nodaway’s boys had every reason to expect a dogfight against Union Star. The Trojans and the Bluejays had lost to North Harrison by similar margins this year. But Dylan McIntyre was all over the floor in Northeast’s 55-36 win, getting 31 points, 12 boards, and 7 steals as he carried the team on his shoulders to Northeast’s second win out of their last three tries.
Northeast got off to a good start as McIntyre and Drew Dack both found the range early for the Bluejays. The lead grew to as much as 13-4 in the third quarter. But then Union Star showed why they had improved so much. With Zeke Fisher and Bryton Potter both pushing the ball up the floor every chance they could get, they sliced the Bluejay lead to 13-7 after one.
Potter and Fisher continued to push the ball up the floor at will for the Trojans and create defensive problems, and they hung around for much of the second quarter. The Bluejay lead was 18-12, but then Dylan McIntyre went coast to coast to right the ship for the Bluejays. Boston Adwell added a 3-pointer, and then Dylan completed a three point play after grabbing an offensive board and getting to the rim to put Northeast up 25-12 at the half.
Dylan McIntyre put the Bluejays up 27-12 to start the third, but then Fisher and Potter started scoring at will again and got the Trojan deficit under double digits again. When Fisher scooped up a long board and dropped it in for three to make it 27-20, it looked like a close game was shaping up. But then Dylan McIntyre responded with a free throw, Northeast got a stop, and Jack Boswell hit a 3-pointer to right the ship. Dylan hit two free throws after a Drew Dack steal, and Dylan converted a steal to make it 37-20 at the 2:21 mark of the third.
Union Star put on a press to start the fourth and Devin Karr, who had not scored all game, suddenly got red hot for the Trojans as they cut it to 40-28 in a hurry. But then Drew Dack scored from inside, Dylan McIntyre scored a 3-point play off a steal, and then went coast to coast and turned it into two free throws to restore order and put Northeast up 47-28.
Karr hit a guarded three to respond for Star, but then Dylan started driving at will and finally, Union Star pulled all their starters at the three minute mark of the fourth. Finally, Kenneth Schieber scored his first career made basket for the Bluejays at the 2:42 mark after a pass from Drew Dack. He had made a free throw before, but it was his first made basket for the Bluejays. He is the brother of basketball, softball, and baseball standout Anne Schieber.
Infuriated at losing this game, Union Star responded by giving 275 title contender Stewartsville/Osborn all they could handle before losing 63-60 Friday.
Dylan McIntyre had 31 for the Bluejays. Drew Dack had 11, Boston Adwell 6, Jack Boswell 3, and Jake Redden and Kenneth Schieber 2.
