Jaden Atkins, Dylan McIntyre are NEN Homecoming Royalty

Dylan McIntyre was named Northeast Nodaway Homecoming King and Jaden Atkins the queen as Northeast celebrated its Homecoming Thursday. It was initially called off due to no school that morning, but then it was back on once it became evident that that roads would clear and the snow would go away. They were crowned by last year’s royalty, Ben Boswell and Torrie Kephart, with Dylan kneeling before Ben before accepting his crown.

Other senior candidates were Lauren McIntyre, Ruby Wilmes, A.J. Adwell, and Creed Wilcox. For a long time, Northeast had one boy and one girl from each of their four high school classes, but in the last few years, it was changed to where three boys and three girls from the senior class would serve as candidates.

Attendants were juniors Dalanie Auffert and Trenton Hartley, sophomores Cora Munns and Kenneth Schieber, and freshmen Shyanne Garnett and Gaige Bodle.

The school still has junior high students vie for prince and princess. This year’s Prince was Fenton Ackley and this year’s Princess was Kynder Florea. Other candidates were Georgia Taylor and Kade Giesken. Crownbearers were Olivia Cordell and Declan Crooks.

Dana Auffert was named Fan of the Year for her pictures of the Bluejay squads.

A competition was organized between some of the boys basketball players and the girls basketball players; some of the junior high players participated as well. A bunch of balloons were piled into the center court, and each team had to organize into three sets of partners. One rode on a scooter with a basket while the other had to push or pull while the person with the basket had to scoop the balloons up in a basket and take them back to their home base. Afterwards, for two minutes, each squad could try to steal the other’s balloons. When the dust was settled, the girls had won by a single balloon, 31-30.

The seniors won the poster contest; the seventh graders were second and the freshmen third.  The seventh graders won the door decoration contest for decorating the custodial door. The eighth graders decorated Mrs. Beatty’s door and got second, while the sophomores decorated Mr. Proffitt’s door and got third. The seniors won the float competition, followed by the juniors and the sophomores.

The musical chair competition, a long-time fixture of NEN Homecoming competitions, was held. Each athlete got to pick someone in the crowd to compete; they could not pick a current athlete and they could not pick Mrs. Boswell. Jill Boswell picked her brother Ben, who still had it despite a one year layoff and won the competition handily.

The Northeast Nodaway Flag Corps and the cheerleaders performed during the halftimes of the game Friday. The band performed as usual, and all Northeast Nodaway alumni who participated in band while they were at Northeast Nodaway were invited to perform. Four alumni accepted. They were Shelby Brandt, Vanessa Riley, Victoria Moran, and current teacher at NEN Jared Freemyer.
