Worth County Conducts Active Shooter Training

On Monday, the Worth County staff participated in a professional development day. Among topics covered included school safety, active shooter training, health and wellness training, and development of critical thinking lessons, projects, and assessments.

Since the 2014-15 school year, Worth County staff have participated in safety and training drills annually to teach them what to do if an armed intruder enters the school. The intruder drills that occurred Monday provide staff with responses that adhere to guidelines and procedures that were presented by the Worth and Nodaway County Sheriff’s Departments. The Worth County Sheriff’s Department has cooperated with the school to provide a presence throughout the building various days throughout the week. The district felt that this would be a positive and cost effective way to build a relationship between students, staff, and law enforcement.

During the afternoon portion of the professional development day, teachers worked on strategies, lessons, projects, and assessments focused on depth of knowledge levels three and four. This is learning that is focused on strategic thinking and extended thinking. These skills apply reasoning, critical thinking, real-world relationships, and application problems. The district made improving critical thinking skills one of its targeted goals as part of the most recent Comprehensive School Improvement Plan (CSIP).

School resumed on Tuesday for the 102nd day of school. The 2022-23 calendar consists of 165 student days and 10 professional development days for teachers and administrators. These professional development days are used to focus goals that are outlined in the CSIP as well as other state and federal requirements. The remaining professional development day for the 22-23 school year will continue to focus on developing assessment capable learners, a research-based strategy that helps students know where they are going, how they are going to get there, and what to do next.
