Tigers Can’t Stop Willhite, Panthers as Pattonsburg Hands Tigers 1st Loss

Worth County could not stop Pattonsburg Friday night as they fell from the ranks of the unbeaten 62-42. They self-destructed on both sides of the ball, getting 12 penalties for the night. For the second time in three weeks, they had trouble containing a mobile quarterback as Panther quarterback Steven Willhite, normally a pocket passer, scrambled his way for 20 carries and 148 yards, frequently keeping drives alive.  That was three times his normal rushing output. And Pattonsburg beat Worth County up front; time and time again, Caleb Parman and the rest of the Worth County backs tried to get to the edges, only to see a swarm of white shirts waiting for them.

Pattonsburg got the ball first and promptly aired it out to Cameron Jones for 36 yards to the Tiger 22. Two nine yard passes to Patrick Cowley put it on the four, and a short pass to Carter Crone put it on the one. Willhite ran it in from there to make it 6-0 with 10:39 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers got one of three onsides kick recoveries for the game, as Gavin Garrett came up with the recovery. But Worth County forced four straight incompletions and got the ball back on downs. Caleb Parman got five yards on two carries and then broke a power sweep left as Isaac Alarcon threw a devastating block, knocking his guy to the ground, and Parman scored from 36 yards out with 9:03 left. He followed a big line surge into the end zone to make it 8-6.

But then Worth County self-destructed on the next play; Pattonsburg was faced with third and 15 on their own 25, but then a pass interference gave them new life on the 40. Patrick Cowley’s catch and run picked up 20 yards, Cameron Jones picked up three more on a pass play to the 17, and Carter Crone caught a pass in the end zone for a score. Patrick Cowley caught a pass to make it 14-8 with 8:07 left.

The referees made the first of several officiating errors during the course of the game; they blew an inadvertent whistle on the ensuing onsides kick as Isaac Alarcon had recovered it and was trying to advance it. This one didn’t matter as Worth County got the ball on the 39 and scored two plays later, when Caleb Parman optioned it to Andrew Alarcon from 38 yards with 7:26 left. Caleb Parman ran in the extra points to make it 16-14.

Pattonsburg started with the ball on their own 20, and Caleb Parman, trying to cover Cameron Jones, slipped and fell as he took a short pass and ran it all the way to the Tiger 14. Then, nobody covered Carter Crone, who took an uncontested pass into the end zone with 5:57 left. Pattonsburg got a second chance because of a pass interference call and converted it as Patrick Cowley’s pass made it 22-16.

Once again, Worth County drove right back down the field. On second and nine, Bryant McCord picked up 10 on a jet sweep behind an Andrew Alarcon block to the 34. Then, they faked the jet sweep and Andrew Alarcon took it 24 yards to the 10. Two plays later, Caleb Parman was seemingly strung out but got a block from Andrew Alarcon and sprung free for a score. Parman followed the blocking of Andrew Alarcon for the extra points to put Worth County back in front 24-22 with 5:04 left in the first quarter.

But once again, Pattonsburg got back in position to score as Cameron Jones made a one-handed grab for 44 yards down to the Tiger 21. Worth County had two chances to stop Pattonsburg; first, the Panthers got a false start, only for Worth County to give it right back with an offsides penalty. Then, they had Pattonsburg stopped for fourth and four at the 15, only for Willhite to scramble for five yards and a first down to the ten. That led to a diving grab by Brett Emig in the end zone to put Pattonsburg on the board again. Steven Willhite’s spread draw made it 30-24 with 2:53 left in the first quarter.

Once again, the officials struggled to call the game. Bryant McCord recovered the ensuing onsides kick and seemingly had some daylight, only for the officials to blow another inadvertent whistle and call it dead at the Tiger 38. This time, it cost Worth County as they fumbled it away two plays later at the Pattonsburg 31. Worth County seemingly had Pattonsburg backed up third and 10 from the 31, only for Willhite to scramble twice for a first down to the 37; it was the second time he had successfully converted a fourth down with a scramble. Austin Welch sacked him for three yards back to the 40, but once again, Willhite scrambled his way for eight yards to the 31. Pattonsburg took a long time to get the play in and the play clock ran down to one second. But then Willhite, under heavy pressure from Colton Wilmes, ran for his life and once again, eluded everyone, this time breaking loose for 31 yards and a score with 11:49 left in the second quarter. On the extra point play, Willhite came under pressure again, but this time, similar to Patrick Mahomes of the Chiefs, hooked it over a defender to Patrick Cowley for the tally to make it 38-24.

Worth County had a chance to answer back as Jacob New threw a strike to Caleb Parman for a middle screen that went for 13 on fourth and five, down to the 23. Caleb Parman picked up seven from a power sweep down to the 11 for another first down, getting a block from Jacob New. But then Worth County could get no further as everywhere they went, they ran into white shirts. Finally, Bryant McCord was seemingly open for six on fourth and nine from the 10, but Lane Huitt hurried New, and his throw was behind McCord and incomplete. A bad snap out it on the seven, but then Willhite aired it out to Cameron Jones for 73 yards to make it 44-24 with 6:55 left in the second.

Worth County could not score on its next possession, but pinned Pattonsburg on its own 1 on its next series. It didn’t matter as a pass interference got them out of the hole to the 15, Carter Crone caught one for 20 to the 35, and Worth County self-destructed again with a defensive holding call to the Tiger 35. Then, another officiating error occurred as Willhite threw it over the middle, a Tiger and a Panther both wrestled for it, and the Worth County player came away with an apparent interception. The correct call was either a catch for Pattonsburg (assuming the Panther was down before the Tiger got the ball away since a tie goes to the receiver) or a pick. But the referees threw up their hands, called it an incomplete pass, and gave it back to Pattonsburg.  Worth County then picked up their third penalty, an offsides penalty, to move the ball on the 30. Willhite slipped and fell on his next play, but then scrambled for 15 yards to the Tiger 15. Then, he aired it out to Patrick Cowley for a score to make it 50-24.

Once again, the referees struggled to keep up with the game on the ensuing onsides kick as one referee signaled that Worth County had recovered the ball and another signaled that Pattonsburg had recovered it. But then gave it back to Pattonsburg. This time, however, Worth County stopped them as the Panthers picked up two false starts and Worth County got a big hit on Willhite as he was throwing it, forcing an incompletion as Worth County got the ball back on their own 35.

Bryant McCord’s catch and run picked up 21 yards to the Pattonsburg with time winding down. Worth County nearly squandered another chance to score with a holding penalty, their seventh of the half, back to the 31 with 34 seconds left. But a wingback pass from Bryant McCord to Caleb Parman was wide open for six, and Worth County closed the gap to 50-30 right before the half. It was the first time in a long time that Worth County had given up 50 or more points in a half.

The defenses took over for the second half; Worth County could not win the battle upfront and could not get anything going offensively. Defensively, Worth County held down Pattonsburg as well as anyone all year. Finally, in the middle of the third quarter, Pattonsburg was seemingly backed up third and ten at their own 24, only for Willhite to scramble for 16 yards and a first down to the 40.

Cameron Jones’ catch and run brought it down to the 25, and two plays later, Willhite scrambled for a touchdown from 22 yards out to make it 56-30. Worth County answered when Pattonsburg was pinned deep in their own territory and a short kick put Worth County on the Pattonsburg 35. On third and nine at the 34, Caleb Parman aired it out to Bryant McCord for a score with no time remaining in the third quarter to make it 56-36.

Worth County self-destructed early in the fourth with three penalties in one possession; they tried to bail themselves out with a guard eligible play, only for Cameron Jones to pick it off and run it back to the Tiger 19. Four carries from Willhite bled the clock down and got Pattonsburg into the end zone with 7:10 left. Worth County pulled off a successful fake punt when Caleb Parman ran it 12 yards on fourth and 10 to the Pattonsburg 33. Andrew Alarcon got a short pass on the right side of the field, got a block from Isaac, and too it clear over to the left side for 29 yards to the 4. Two plays later, Jacob New faked a handoff to Caleb Parman and took it in from three yards out to make it 62-42 with 5:12 left.

Pattonsburg went three and out after taking some time off the clock, and the punt bounced off Isaac Alarcon into the green shirts, which should have ended it. But once again, the officials blew an inadvertent whistle, their third of the game; they threw their hands up and had Pattonsburg rekick. Worth County drove down as far as the 14 after Jacob New aired one out to Bryant McCord for 30 yards, but could get no farther as they ran into a swarm of green shirts the rest of the way.
