Worth County's softball team has struggled to finish off games this year, fading late in each of their first two losses. They faded late again against North Harrison in the first round of the Albany Tournament on Saturday, losing 7-2. They were the bottom seed, having not won a game in that tournament for the last three years. But they broke that trend by beating North Andrew 14-7 in the consolation round, against a team that had routed them the year before. That pitted them against Albany, a team which had beaten them three times last year. But this time was different as Worth County turned around and came out on top in a back and forth game with the Warriors, winning 8-6.
"I told them we've been finding ways to lose, and now we needed to find a way to win," said Coach Dave Gilland. He said that Mollie Blaine, Rachael Gardner, Payton Adwell, Sidney Troutwine, Rikky Hunt, and Dominique Findley all hit well that afternoon. Hailey Hunt ran the bases well, always trying to take the extra base and it paid off most of the time. Adwell, Troutwine, and Rikky Jo all pulled off double steals, with Hunt stealing home on one play.
Payton Adwell played well behind the plate, while Dominique Findley made a good catch out in the outfield and Rachael Gardner threw out a runner at first from her right field position. Sidney Troutwine fielded well from the shortstop position. The hard work paid off as the Tigers won their first trophy in quite some time.
