Ben Hart and Breann O'Riley were named North-West Nodaway royalty Friday evening before the Muskets' game with East Atchison. The Muskets proceeded to win their first game of the year, 80-30 in a halftime game. North-West Nodaway led East Atchison 54-22 after one quarter.
North Nodaway students braved 92 degree heat to celebrate their homecoming Friday afternoon ahead of their game against East Atchison. The North-West Nodaway Muskets have lost their first two games of the year, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm as everyone still welcomed the day off from school. The school adopted a "Carnival" theme for this year's festivities. The band opened the day with the playing of the fight song; they are now directed by former Worth County band teacher Stephen Till. "North Nodaway's a great school," he said, adding that he was enjoying his time thoroughly there. During the parade, he had his band march around in circles while playing.
After all the athletes and cheerleaders were introduced, high school classes were organized into teams of six. The juniors were pitted against the freshmen and the seniors against the sophomores in a relay race that involved obstacles. Students rolled and flipped their way to the 40, crab walked for 10 more yards, threw tennis balls at buckets, and ran back to the start line. The juniors beat the freshmen while the seniors beat the sophomores. In the race between the seniors and juniors, it was down to the wire, but the seniors pulled off the win.
In the skits, the juniors set up a kissing booth where someone threw up after kissing an "East Atchison" player; when the girls kissed the Musket players, it made their day. The seniors made up a jukebox which opened to "pop goes the weasel." The cheerleader/football skit involved the cheerleaders blindfolding the football players and giving them a fruit roll, which they were to eat; at the end, they were to get a "kiss" with their "dates." However, they tricked them into "kissing" each other. The skit was kind of spoiled when football player Ben Hart figured out what was going on.
Awards for best-dressed students were handed out. For junior high, the best dressed were Alaina Cross and Carson Oberhauser. For high school, the best dressed were Bethany Herndon, Cole Bird, and Koby Reynolds. The best-dressed teachers were Ms. Smail and Ms. Larabee.
The seniors won the skit, while the juniors were second. For the float, the freshman were 1st, the sophomores 2nd, the juniors 3rd, and the seniors 4th; this was a result that was loudly protested by the seniors, to no avail.
Freshman attendants were Keegan O'Riley and Cody Wood. Sophomore attendants were Taylor Combs and Cole Bird. Junior attendants were Shelby King and Garrett Torres. Queen candidates were Darian Philpott, Brittany Wood, and Breann O'Riley. King candidates were Cade Owens, Koby Reynolds, and Ben Hart.
