It was a tough week for the Northeast Nodaway basketball teams as they both dropped two games this week. They battled two tough teams as well as the flu and could never get untracked. The girls fell 38-19 to Jefferson as they could never get untracked offensively. They had two good quarters and they did better than they did the first time they played the Eagles, but they had bad second and third quarters in taking the loss.
Holly Redden's 3-pointer late in the first quarter gave Northeast a 6-5 lead, but then Jefferson scored the next 13 points and Northeast went scoreless in the second quarter as they trailed 18-6 at the break. They continued to struggle in the third quarter and fell behind by as much as 31-11 before they showed some life in the fourth and came as close as 15 at one point. Taryn Farnan led the scoring with seven points for Northeast. Dallis Coffelt had 4, Claudia Wiederholt had 4, and Holly Redden three.
The boys gave Jefferson all they could handle in the first half, playing them to a 15-15 tie. Hopes were up for Northeast's first win over Jefferson since the 1990's, but there was no such luck. Jefferson scored the first seven points of the second half and maintained the lead throughout the game and hit their free throws down the stretch for a 47-37 win. Steve Schulte did all he could in the losing effort, scoring 14 points in a career night for him. Aaron Patton added 10. Kevin Stoll had six. Tyler Schmitz had 4 and took a charge on defense. Sage DeLong had three. Northeast battled back from a 33-23 third quarter deficit and had it down to 35-30 at one point with chances to make it one possession, but they could not buy a bucket down the floor in the fourth quarter until it was too late.
The girls lost their Courtwarming tilt with DeKalb 40-18. The Bluejays played the first two quarters well against the Tigers, trailing only 14-11 at the break. They gave up the first two baskets of the second half but then fought back to make it 18-15 early. But from there, Northeast only scored three points the rest of the way as DeKalb turned it into a layup drill and went on to win 40-18. Taryn Farnan led the scoring for Northeast with 5 points. Dallis Coffelt, Claudia Wiederholt, and Kristan Judd each had 3. Kaysie Wiederholt and Holly Redden each had 2.
The boys played their worst game of the year against DeKalb, falling 67-34. The game turned into a layup drill by the second quarter as Northeast let DeKalb dictate the tempo of the game and speed them up instead of slowing down and running their offense. Sage DeLong's dunk, Shaun Burns' 30 footer at the buzzer, and Garet Jackson's 3-pointer with a defender all over him were among the few highlights for the Bluejay boys.
