Marti Meyers Named Grant City Lions President

Marti Meyers was named the new Grant City Lions Club President at their regular meeting Tuesday. New officers were named at that meeting. Matt Martz was named vice-president, Kevin Harding second vice-president, Bill Calhoon was renamed treasurer, and Mike Cook was lion tamer.

The Lions Club voted to give funds to various causes. They donated $500 to Leader Dog, which provides dogs for blind, visually impaired, and deaf-blind people. This charity is supported by many Lions Clubs around the country. They also voted to donate $100 to the Worth County Red Cross Drive headed by Judith Matteson. In January, they donated $200 to Audio Reader. A project of the University of Kansas, they provide audio reading for blind and print-disabled persons; they have helped local people in the area. All funds donated to the Grant City Lions Club by the public, given through memorial funds, or raised through their activities are given to charitable causes. Administrative costs are covered through membership dues. Typically, money is given to sight-related activities and local causes along with a local scholarship.

The club agreed to help the Young Farmers Tractor Pull that will be held on August 6th. However, they will not be doing the Draft Horse Pull this year due to lack of interest and lack of local participation.

Two Teen Wrecks in Nodaway County Wednesday

There were two teen wrecks in Nodaway County Wednesday. The first occurred at 12:41 am that morning near Wilcox. The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports that a 2001 Ford Explorer driven by Trevor Meyer (19) of Burlington Junction was northbound on 71 and went off the east side of the roadway. The vehicle struck a ditch and overturned several times before coming to rest on its top facing northeast. Meyer received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. He was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

The second involved a two-car accident on MacArthur Drive at Ideal Road two miles north of Maryville. The Patrol reports that a 2001 Nissan Pathfinder driven by Joseph Mullings (23) of Maryville was westbound on MacArthur Drive traveling on the wrong side of the roadway as a 2006 KIA Optima driven by Jennifer Cacek (17) of Maryville was making a right turn onto eastbound MacArthur Drive from Ideal Road at around 4:53 pm Wednesday afternoon. The Pathfinder struck the Optima. Both vehicles came to rest on their wheels in the eastbound lane of MacArthur Drive. Cacek received minor injuries and was transported to St. Francis Hospital. She was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the accident.

Obituary -- Larry Busby 1949-2016

Larry Busby, 66, Parnell, Missouri, died Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at his home surrounded by his family.

He was born July 29, 1949 in Maryville to John L. and Catherine (Spire) Busby. They preceded him in death.

Larry and Debbie DeFreece were married November 9, 1974 in St. Joseph Parish, Parnell.

A graduate of Northeast Nodaway R-V High School, he was a farmer. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Parnell, Nodaway County Cattleman's Association, Farm Bureau and Missouri Corn Growers.

Larry is survived by his wife Debbie Busby of the home in Parnell; sons Brad (Jamie) Busby and Matthew Busby, Parnell, daughter Natalie (Matthew) Yaple, Maryville; 5 grandchildren: Makayla, Emily and Hayden Yaple, and Baylie and Bexlie Busby; brothers: Earl (Teri) Busby, Kilgore, Texas, Richard (Cindy) Busby, Parnell and Kevin (Juanita) Busby, St. Joseph, MO and sister Mary Jo (Mike) Barmann, Maryville.

Parish Rosary will be 5:00 PM Friday, March 18th, followed by a visitation from 5:30-8:00 PM at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Parnell.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Saturday, March 19th, also at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Burial will be in St Joseph Cemetery, Parnell.

Here is some information about how dispose of these latex paint and alkaline batteries safely in the trash since we no longer accept these items at the HHW collections.

How to Safely Dispose of Latex Paint and Household Alkaline Batteries

Disposal of latex paint in the garbage

To safely dispose of latex paint in the trash is must be dried out.  Here’s how:

1.  Add equal parts clay kitty litter to latex paint in the can (one part paint to one part kitty litter).

     If you have more than a half a can, pour the paint into a lined cardboard box then pour in cat litter.

2.  Stir the cat litter into the paint until it has an oatmeal-like consistency that will not spill out.

3.  Allow the paint and cat litter mixture to sit for one hour.

4.  Throw the dried paint in the can in the garbage with the lid off.

Instead of cat litter, you can use a commercial paint hardener. Follow the instructions on the label. For very small amounts, you can paint on cardboard or newspaper and discard the newspaper/cardboard in the garbage when dry.

If you have latex paint in cans that are less than 5 years old and rust-free they can be donated to support Habitat for Humanity at the ReStore; Google Habitat for Humanity to find the most convenient store. Oil-based paint is hazardous and must be disposed of at one of the household hazardous waste collections.

Disposal of household alkaline batteries

Due to concerns about mercury in the municipal solid waste stream, the added mercury has been eliminated from alkaline batteries. Alkaline batteries are composed primarily of common metals—steel, zinc, and manganese—and do not pose a health or environmental risk during normal use or disposal.

Alkaline batteries can be safely disposed of with normal household waste. Never dispose of batteries in fire because they could explode.  It is important not to dispose of large numbers of alkaline batteries in a group. Used batteries are often not completely dead. Grouping used batteries together can bring these live batteries into contact with one another, creating safety risks.  The best thing to do is to discard them in the trash when they are taken out of a device to put in new batteries.

Jeff Ruckman Promoted to Chief Master Sergeant

Senior Master Sergeant (SMSgt) (E-8) Jeffrey M. Ruckman was recently selected for promotion to the highest Air Force enlisted rank of chief master sergeant (CMSgt) (E-9). Public Law establishes enlisted strength levels for all branches of the United States military. Currently, only 1 percent of the Air Force’s total active duty enlisted may serve as CMSgt. 

SMSgt Ruckman serves as the 366th Training Squadron, Detachment 6, Senior Enlisted Manager at Naval Construction Battalion Center, Gulfport Mississippi. He oversees operations and training of Airmen attending the tri-service Structures Apprentice course and three advanced supplemental courses.

SMSgt Ruckman has served in the Air Force for 22-years with past assignments in Missouri, Japan, Oklahoma, Guam, and Alaska with an upcoming assignment to The Republic of Korea. His service also includes deployments to Cuba, two tours in Saudi Arabia, Oman, two tours in Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates. 

Jeff is married to Lori (Rodseth), is the son of Michael and Beverly Ruckman, and is the grandson of Galen Ruckman and the late Betty Ruckman and Glen and Viola Jennings.
