Tiger Boys Hold Off Frantic Bluejay Rally

Worth County held off Northeast Nodaway’s frantic efforts to get back into the game, coming away with the 53-47 win Tuesday, December 6th.

Both teams were going through similar trials. Worth County has had Tyler New carry much of the scoring load, getting as many as 35 points in the win against South Harrison. But they have had trouble getting the other four players on the floor in the scoring column.

Similarly, the Bluejays have had Dylan McIntyre carry the scoring load, getting as many as 55 in one game and 31 in another game.

The game last Tuesday turned into a scoring duel between New and McIntyre. Dylan McIntyre had 24 points to 22 points for Tyler New. But it was Tyler New who had more support from his teammates as Levi Cassavaugh had 15 that night and Tanner Ridge added 8.

Drew Dack’s steal put Northeast in front 4-3 with 4:54 left in the first, but then Tanner Ridge hit two 3-pointers and Levi Cassavaugh one to make it 12-6. Jake Redden scored from inside for Northeast at the buzzer to cut the Bluejay deficit 14-9.

Worth County struck in the second with Levi Cassavaugh’s 3-pointer and two free throws along with a fast break by Tyler New and two free throws from New. Northeast countered with four points from Dylan McIntyre, an inside shot from Jake Redden, and a free throw from Boston Adwell to keep it at 22-16.

It was the third quarter in which Worth County built up a big lead. With the Tigers leading 27-20, Levi Cassavaugh went to the rack and drew Dylan McIntyre’s third foul and converted a three point play. This opened up the floodgates as Levi drove and scored again. Tyler New then scored six straight and Worth County was in front by 18 at 38-20 halfway through the third. Dylan McIntyre did all he could, scoring nine in the period, but Brayden Combs’ 3-pointer kept the Tigers up 47-31 going into the fourth.

But then the Bluejays finally started getting scoring from their supporting cast and they started swinging the momentum again. Drew Dack scored off a drive and Boston Adwell hit Dylan McIntyre inside to make it 47-35 with 6:14 again.

Landon Moser went backdoor and got a pass from Levi Cassavaugh, but then Jake Redden scored from inside off a pass from Boston, Drew Dack scored off a steal, Dylan McIntyre got a putback, and Dylan McIntyre hit Jack Boswell cutting inside, and all of a sudden, the game was following the script of DeKalb’s near-comeback against Worth County and the Bluejays were only down 49-43 with 3:30 left.

But after Northeast couldn’t convert on another steal, Worth County this time settled down and managed to convert the game, although the final few minutes were not without their anxious moments. Coach Les New said he had spent 30 minutes in the locker room with the team before the game covering endgame situations, trying to avoid a repeat of the near-meltdown against DeKalb.

Northeast’s players started fouling out, and they had to try to make something happen. But when Drew Dack, who had stolen the ball from Tyler New twice that game, tried again, he missed and Tyler went to the rack to make it 51-43.

Dylan McIntyre scored from inside with 56 seconds after getting a pass from Boston Adwell to cut it to 51-45, and Levi Cassavaugh missed the front end of a one and one and the ensuing rebound was a tieup that went to Northeast. But Northeast traveled with 27 seconds left and Drew Dack fouled out with 24 seconds. Worth County missed another one and one, but Karson Briner got the offensive board and Tyler New hit two free throws with 18 seconds left to make it three possessions again at 53-45. Worth County did a much better job of making sure the ball was in Tyler New’s or Levi Cassavaugh’s hands down the stretch, when they needed ballhandlers to handle the pressure at the end.

Dylan McIntyre scored on a layup with 10 seconds left, but then Worth County was able to run the clock out to get the win.

Tyler New had 22 points for the Tigers. Levi Cassavaugh had 15, Tanner Ridge 8, John Galanakis and Brayden Combs 3 each, and Landon Moser 2.

For Northeast, Dylan McIntyre had 24 points. Jake Redden had 8, Drew Dack 6, and Boston Adwell, Jack Boswell, and Trenton Hartley had 3 points each for Northeast. Boston Adwell had 7 assists.
