Worth County’s girls are back to the drawing board again. For the second year in a row, they lost a key player to injury in the first game of the season, this time Autumn Cousatte (ACL). Once again, they had a brutal schedule to start the season, facing state-ranked Mercer and a rapidly improving South Harrison squad that has gotten much better since Kale Watson took over the girls squad two years ago. They recovered to win an exciting 43-41 game against Pattonsburg, which had their number the previous two years, but then had a frustrating 31-24 loss to Stanberry Friday as they were denied consolation in the Albany Tournament.
The game looked like theirs for the taking after they jumped out to an 8-4 lead after one quarter of play. They came out in man to man, helped out well on defense, and Hailey Adwell was getting out and jumping passes, collecting tips and steals. Kynah Steele had 4 for the Tigers while Ali Brown and Adwell each added two.
But in the second quarter, the Tigers reverted to the form of last year, in which they won only three games and turned the ball over right and left. They proceeded to turn the ball over 23 times that night and gave up 14 offensive boards, allowing Stanberry 37 extra possessions. Defensively, they let Amelia Wallace run wild, scoring 14 points in a 19-0 Stanberry run. By the time the dust had settled, the Tigers were down 21-8 at the four minute mark of the third quarter and hadn’t scored for the last 12 minutes.
Hailey Adwell hit two free throws with 4:14 left in the third to finally break the drought. After not getting to the line at all in the first half, Worth County finally started getting on the line in the second half. Adwell got a putback and then Taylor Sanders hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 24-15. Sanders was hammered attempting another 3-pointer and hit all three of her tries. Somehow, despite all the mistakes, the Tigers were only down six at 24-18.
Kiley Mattson cut inside to make it 26-18, but then Adwell got loose in transition after a pass from Ali Brown and a steal from Abbi. Adwell added two free throws to make it 26-22 with 4:16 left.
But like North Nodaway, Stanberry likes running out the clock early in the fourth quarter, and they began milking the clock with four minutes left. When Stanberry missed a 1-1, the Tigers got it down to three with 1:20 left when Liz Brown hit Hailey Adwell on the right side to make it 27-24 with 1:20 left. But then Katie Angle hit a free throw, Adwell missed from the left side, and Amelia Wallace hit a free throw with 41 seconds left to make it 29-24. After Liz Brown missed a 3-pointer, Trista Lager hit two more to seal it.
Hailey Adwell scored 12 for the Tigers. Taylor Sanders had 6, Kynah Steele 4, and Ali Brown 2.
Rylee Ruckman, Ali Brown, and Kynah Steele had 1 block each.
